5D mk2 or mk 3?

Yes
I've decided to buy a full frame camera to compliment my 7D. The logical choice for me would be a 5D mk 2, but how much substance is there in the rumours that a mk 3 is just over the horizon?

The EOS 5D was announced in August 2005. 5D2 was announced in September 2008. This product line is on a longer cycle than the lower models, but 3 years seems to be about right. That would put a replacement at aug/sept 2011.

Ultimately all of these things get replaced, it's a matter of when not if. Currently the 5D2 seems to be selling well to both the pro video group as well as to photographers. Canon needn't feel rushed to bring out a replacement (since the majority of 5D2 and D700 buyers are already tied into canon or nikon lens systems, so the D700 isn't really taking sales away, and Sony seem equivocal about full-frame support). I suspect that canon will take the time required to make sure that the next camera is a knockout - expect faster CMOS readout (to reduce rolling shutter "Jello" in video), higher framerate (probably 5FPS), 7D AF system and the usual excellent sensor (not sure whether they'll bother to increase resolution, but hopefully a bit lower noise and better DR).

Depends on how quick you want to buy one.

If you do hold on until the mkIII is out, I would have thought you'd have to wait at least 6 months + for the price to settle down to a realistic price, so could be this time next year before you get one (if it's launched early 2011 ?).

I am in the same situation, and decided I am going to buy a Mk2 from Kerso, and will do what I always do, when the Mk3 comes out, sell the Mk2 and get the Mk3.

I feel the Mk3 is a long way off yet.

If you wait you wait forever as there is always a new model just around the corner, if you need a full frame camera just buy one. My guess is the MKiii is at least 12 months away.

No point thinking like this and if the Mark II does what you need it to then go for it!!! Like most technology, it's out of date coem the next day anyway! lol

All valid points - thanks for the input, guys. I think going for the mk 2 now is what I will do. I cant possibly wait 12 months - that'll knacker me!!!

Once again, thanks guys.

By the way - is it common to have a 7D and a 5D mk 2?

Do you want to be common, or unique? ;)

I hope so, as I will have that very combo. Idea is 5d for Studio, and 7D for wildlife. Both will work well with my lenses, and give me different lengths, depending on what combo I decide. :)

7d for action. and wildlife. with the extra crop. and 5d for landscape portraits etc
i have a 5d mk 1 and am wondering if to get a 7d or a 5dmk11

I have a 7D and will hopefully be adding a 5D sooner rather than later.

For me it's an almost perfect mix, I like shooting wildlife and Bike racing, but I love doing portraits and the odd bit of landscape too. Plus I want a 2nd body so the wife can join in on the photography too.

All those wanting 5D's should club together, and try for a bulk discount.

how about a 2nd hand 1Ds mk3?..I love mine beats a 5d any day...

What's the price difference between the two?

Well I've seen 1Ds 3 going for about £2500, poss even less. There was one on the forum here recently, can't remember the final price but I was astonished to see it hang about for a while.

The build quality is in a different league to the 5D and the AF system is much improved over the 5D...the 5Dmk1 and mark2 AF systems are I'm almost sure the same and are really a bit old fashioned now and while I appreciate for landscapes this may not be a major issue, it's still better to have a better system.
