Ok, I've been using a 5D Mk1 (classic) for just over a year now and like full-frame etc. I've three or four decent quality camera lenses, with possibly more to come in the not too distant future.

I've always wanted a 5D MkII, although just couldn't stretch to one money wise, so within the next few months I'm hoping of being able to buy either a 5DMk II or 5D MkIII (new or second hand).

I'm going to list in order what I shoot mainly, 1. = being priority, 4.= least important etc...

So changing up from my 5D Mk1, which 5D model (2 or 3) would suit me best from your experience please....? I try strive for the end product quality image.

1. Landscape
2. General stuff - Macro
3. Sports
4. Weddings & portraits

All advice/thoughts/experience/views welcome as to which 5D body would suit, thanks!
 
I can only talk about the 5D3 but if you went down that route you would not be disappointed :thumb: I was in your position of should I save money for more lens by getting the 5D2 or go for the new 5D3 and in the end I just knew that in 12 months I'd be kicking myself for not going 5D3 if I had gone for the 5D2, I know that your priorities will not always need the capabilities of the 3 but when you do want them and you don't have them you would be left wanting so on that front I would go 3 over 2 :thumbs:

Well obviously the 5D3. But it's twice the price.
 
I'd be interested if people thought the 5d3 is worth twice the price when it comes to bang to buck

I know it was slightly different for me as I had the resale of the mk2 to offset the mk3 but in my opinion the cost difference is definitely worth it.

The mk2 is a brilliant camera with great IQ. The AF is a bit limited though, I spent the majority of my time on centre focus point and focus/re-composing with the back button. IMO the AF of the mk3 alone is worth the difference in cost (I didn't even know it was that important to me as I'd become so used to the mk2's AF).

Also, for me the extra 2 stops of high ISO performance are a bonus. I've gotten used to what the mk2 can do and being able to push things even further will be great. I know 2 stops doesn't sound like much but remember that is the ability to get the shot in a 1/4 of the light the mk2 can.

All in all, Canon seemed to have listened to the feedback from the mk2 and addressed what mattered to people. Not many people were vocal about the resolution of the mk2 (rightly so) so that has taken a back seat (again rightly so IMO), but everything else has seemed to be addressed.

My advice, if you already have some good glass and can stretch to the mk3 do so, you won't regret it.
 
MkII for landscapes surely?!!

MkIII is aimed at wedding togs etc, with the price well out of reach of your humble landscaper.

Why do you need a bazillion focus points when one suffices for landscape anyway?!

Keep hold of your cash, get a MkII and some decent glass.

In some ways, naming the camera 5DMk3 draws comparisons with the Mk2 that wouldn't arise if it was called something more different.

Because it is a very different camera in at least two important aspects. It does everything the 5D2 can do, but better and with a few more useful features, plus it has brilliant AF and can shoot at 6fps.

Those last two things bring sport and action photography right into the Mk3's skill set in a way that the Mk2 simply cannot match. And the Nikon D800 also struggles with a slower frame rate.

IMHO, the 5DMk3 is the best all-rounder out there now, bar none.
 
+1 for the Mk3. I went from a 550D to a 7D and 5D2 combo and that was great for a while. However, I was never totally happy with what I was getting from the 7D (keeper rate wasn't outstanding) so I decided to sell both and go for the Mk3. Best thing I ever did, my keeper rate is amazing so far, none of my lenses have needed any MA and the camera is awesome. The only thing I missed was the 2 bodies so I got a 60D as a backup though it's not going to get much use TBH. 5D2 was very good, but the 5D3 is amazing and IMO definitely worth the extra if you can afford it.
