A simple question. I'm fancying giving FF a try, so it seems to be a choice of a used 5D or 1Ds. Anyone used both and can give me some hands on advice on my choice. My lenses are a 24-105L and a 70-200 2.8L IS, along with a Sigma 10-20. These are used on a 50D which I will be keeping, so I will also need a wide lens for FF. Any advice will be most welcome.

Both are fine camera's, I have a 5D and i love it, not intending to upgrade to the MKII as i just want to take photos(not HD Movies). The Sigma 10-20 will not work on "any" of those FF camera's because its made for Crop camera's APS-C. Other than that the other two lenses will work perfectly. The 1D series will beat the 5D hands down with image quality, the build on the 1D is like a rock. If you get a 1Ds for the right price, I would go for that.

In saying that, i would upgrade from a 5D to a 1Ds MKII in a heartbeat.

Good site here showing the technical side of things. I was in the same position not so long ago but one thing that put me off the 1Ds what the older technology. I'm sure it's still a great camera but also does the 1Ds not take the older type of batteries which have that memory effect? I had a D1X and the battery life was terrible (although a new battery could have fixed it! lol).

Had both the 5D and 1DsII till Feb this year.

I'd say it depends what you want to shoot. If it's staying still and generally in good conditions then a 5D will suffice quite nicely. If it's moving, in nasty conditions then the 1Ds is build like a tank, the AF is superb.

Mine was a MkII and the battery was fine but can't swear to the MkI.

There was another thread about this last week I think. Generally, the 5D has better IQ, better high ISO, faster operation, is smaller and has a bigger screen. The 1DS is built better and has the built in grip.

Personally I would always go with the 5D unless you needed the 1 series' AF or weather sealing.

1Ds is a great sturdy build but don't use it for landscapes. The camera has a known issue with a green colour cast and this becomes very apparent in weak evening/morning sun. I don't shoot landscape so this isn't a problem for me. You can download custom colour curves to correct it I think.

I can't notice anything like that on mkII. Do you mean Ds can get the white balance wrong - the green-magenta balance? That takes 2s to fix in LR.

I would give DsII a vote for anything more serious or harmful over 5D. It is a landscape and portrait camera, only surpassed by 1Ds mk3 and D3x. 5D comes to its own when the lighter package is important (travel), and when 12MP and average AF is enough.
