Yes
been up to the mach loop today
put the 100-400 on to the 5dmk1, put my camera in to my bag( well half in half out) and shock horror a gust of wind blew my bag and camera fell out
well it fell front lens down and caught a rock ( no lens hood on) i thought there goes my lens. id say it only fell a couple of inches and only front element caught the rock,,
anyway no damage to glass (phew) just small scuff nr the filter thread
just then hawk came through, points camera towards it and click, nothing.
kept trying still nothing. put the lens on 30 d and it worked. so started to check the 5d out. and this is weird
top plate working no matter what i set dial to shutter app manual etc it lights up
shutter not clicking although it dont feel jammed
and lcd not working. nothing. even the red light under the dial control is not working . so why is the top plate fine
was going to take the back up battery out and see if that does anything before i need to send it to canon, but cant get the cover off , and cant think of anything else to try

anyone any ideas

(please note this is conjecture, I don't know about internal camera architecture)

Sounds like a connection has been knocked off inside. Backup battery probably just holds the date etc so if dumping the main battery out doesn't fix it I'm pretty sure the backup will make no difference.

Unfortunately then, it looks like you may need to send this to Canon.

its the only thing i can think of trying,, just managed to get back up battery out so ill leave it out a while and keep fingers toes crossed
just dont understand why top plate working but not shutter and screen

Glad your lens is okay,

Have you tried another lens on your 5D - if you don't get any luck when you've replaced both batteries ?

the lens is going down to canon next week any way . it needs new IS unit and new friction ring, ( dont know why i took it with me today) so i guess ill be able to send the body at the same time.
i did try the 70-200 on it but no luck, just the top plate working

the back up batt removal did nothing. i just dont understand what's wrong with it, and why the top plate is still working

That's why I think a connection is loose or bust, bear in mind that the two areas are unlikely to be on the same cct board. I really think you need to send it in for repair.

well ill be sending the 100-400 in for repair on monday. so ill pop it in the same box
lets hope its not a big job. costing enough to get the lens repaired

I had a similar thing with a 350D, I know it isn't even in the same ballpark as the 5D, but mine went rolling down a rocky slope in Snowdonia, breaking the filter holder but otherwise looking ok. However, it had stopped working all together, with no sign of life. I sent it to Lehmann ltd in Stoke who repaired it very quickly and at a reasonable price. I'd happily recommend them.

actually i took my 100-400 to stoke 2 weeks ago and picked it up on thursday
they wanted £360 to repair it, canon elstree have a fixed price of £127 for most repair jobs so ill be sending it down there.
its weird my 30d that i have had for yrs has had loads of falls. one in particular my tripod blew over backwards and landed with the back of the camera on the ground. a few scuffs was all it received.
just out of curiosity what did the repair for the 350d come to

I can't remember exactly but I think it was about £80ish. The board was the one with the usb port and remote switch socket.
Its good to know about elstree though. Hope you get it fixed ok.
