Been using my Canon 5D Mk1 for a few months now, nearly got the hang of it.

Seems whilst shooting in bright sunny days you always have to under expose around a full stop to acheive a normal photo or it goes way over exposed at normal '0' camera's exposure if you know what I mean. I bracket like mad normally under exposing. My colour temp is set around 6700/6800k.


Is this normal for other 5D Mk1 users?
 
Not a 5D user but........I've own(ed) 2 Canons, a 500d and my current 7D, both of which are (were) prone to overexpose on bright days usually by about 1/2 to 1 stop and as a result I always shoot with -1/2 exp comp dialled in for regular daylight shots in bright light, -1/3 in "normal" light. I think it's a Canon thing :shake:

FWIW, I also have a G12 which nails auto exp 95% of the time.
 
I didn't see anything like this at all on my 5D. Could you post up an example with exif intact?
 
Does it sound in any way loose? Replacement Canon focusing screens come with a tool to unclip the existing screen and replace with the new one. I guess these tools must be available on their own too to re-fit the existing screen. But...this is just one possibility of many. More info is needed e.g. photos with EXIF data before you start taking the camera to bits.

Is there anything else that looks or feels a bit strange? Do the shutter speeds match what you expect (now that is a tricky thing to test!).
 
What metering mode are you using?
 
Have you got the standard focus screen fitted ? Check that custom function 00 is set on 0 for the standard screen.
