As the title says I had the misfortune to bounce my 5D3 at the weekend and the body has cracked across the top. Just asking for best place to get a quote for repair. It will be an insurance job as it's covered on the house contents.
 
Replacement case is around the £400 mark. It's what they offered me for the paint wearing from the corner.
 
Andy, don't want to frighten you but isn't the 5D3 case made of some form of metal? If it's cracked it must have had a hell of a bang. Are you sure that nothing else has gone too?
 
Crap metal that is (some sort of Mg alloy). They used to make 1D series properly till mk3 or 4, and then switched to this lighter brittle stuff. Somebody I know managed to crack open 1Dx after 3ft fall on the carpet floor (this is what he told me at least).

On another note, WHAT IS WRONG WITH USING CAMERA STRAP?

That was what I thought but wanted input if anyone had had problems with them.

The price shouldn't matter as it should be covered by my house insurance but haven't been in touch with them yet.

Yes it was quite a knock onto the rocks at the top of Pen-Y-Fan.

As none of them are close I'll probably send it to Elstree.

I agree it does look like a Mag type alloy I can see along the crack.

The strap is not to practical when on a tripod ;) what would be better is me paying more attention to the tripod set up particularly in the gusty wind.

I could not disagree more with you. I have been using strap and tripod for years now and they are fully compatible and practical :)
 
My strap gave way on my Fuji Xpro-1 straight on to concrete about 3 ft then rolled,luckily the grip took most of drop,and the lens hood helped keep lens ok.

Asto the strap issue, the photographer that used to come each week always used kept the camera round his neck and clipped it to the tripod when needed (strap still worn), this was ever since his rather sturdy looking tripod blew over in a gust of wind, with his camera fixed on top.
 
For the project I am working on, I have abandoned my black Rapid strap so that I can have the camera On the monopod / tripod as well as keeping it tethered to me... My 5d2 bounced on a metal deck and survived that- it was around my neck but I hit the deck first! Hope it's ok otherwise... Might be worth getting the lens serviced; mine was not quite the same even tho the hood did its job very well.

I had the same - I recall that on inspection at Elstree, they needed to replace the top plate (where Canon is stamped) and the focus box - and both jobs were completed for around £200. It wasn't as bad as I'd expected.

This. I have lost the count of times when the tripod head failed to lock properly. Weather can certainly help if you use 410 geared. With a strap it barely swings and lands safely in my left hand. Insurance would have long disowned me otherwise.
 
A guy I go with has one. Don't know why as he mostly shoots indoors. He gets on OK with it but admits there are times when it's hard to use. He seems to have to keep looking where the buttons are.

Seems like a good idea in theory. Not so sure about in practice.
