Need some advice, I currently have a 5dc and 1dsii, can't make my mind up which to keep, which one and why in your opinion? Thanks

I've only had the 1d a few days and return time is running out so it's crunch time. It's a pain because apart from a few tests shots I haven't spent a whole day with the 1d as other things came up.

The iq does have a slight edge over the 5d and focus hunts less than 5d in lower light. It's a tough choice as I mainly shoot portrait but the af and built in vert grip are handy but at the same time it would get heavy after a while. I guess the 5d has grown on me as I've had it longer and I haven't got my head round the insane amount of customisation the 1d has.

I think in the back of my mind I know the 1d is the better camera overall it's just a case of not being used to it. Lol, I thought the 5d screen was rubbish!
 
How about selling both and getting a 5dii for better resolution, the reasons you already like the 5d and all the other improvements over the 5d, but that might just be me not wanting to carry a 1d around all the time. But wait until the 5diii's are available and the 5dii's get cheaper which is already happening.
 
The 5dii is pretty much the same camera as the 5d2 though so its a sideways step for much more money as i don't really require the better screen or the extra mp. And if I were to spend near that I'd go d700.

He's right, as long as you're happy with the weight and the small screen (not sure about that) and then you'll have to keep the 5d for times when you don't want to carry a brick!
 
My experience was that IQ was very similar, raw from the 5d is a bit sharper and cleaner at iso100 but the 1ds2 files have more latitude for adjustment and can be cropped harder, also liked the look more from the 1ds2, can't explain why but when viewed on screen they just have something special about them. I got rid of the 1ds2 because of teh weight and screen, also couldn't see any difference in 30"x20" prints, which is as large as I go.

I've gone for a 5Dc and 7D so I never have to carry the brick around and my final lens lineup will be 17-40, 70-200/f4, 50mm and 100mm macro,this allows me to do everything from wideangle landscapes through macro and portraits and a bit of sport. I know this doesn't help much but perhaps can give you a longer term option.

I've had a 1Dmk2 before my 5Dmk1, so I can comment on the handling issues/AF differences. Going back to the 9point system is certainly a step back, which cancels out the smaller/lighter body. I much prefer the UI on the 1D, I could change various settings without having to look, I find the 5D trickier to use (even after much more time using that system), then there's the weather sealing too.

If your 5D is gripped, or you will be using the portrait buttons a lot I'd go for the 1D, otherwise it really is that close.
 
I had a 5D and upgraded to the 1Ds Mkii

My logic was (pretty much the same as above):

1. I love the layout of the 1D series and how they work, I can use the system a LOT faster than the 5D
2. I wanted the AF, I shoot cycling and point-to-point and the 5D just couldn't hack it.
3. I wanted the second card slot for a eye-fi card to output to my i-pad
4. Higher resolution so more cropping room when required.
5. Faster continuous (marginal but noticeable)

- handling is so much better, i love the weight and build quality
- focus is infinitely better

the screen and buffer are deeply annoying, but not deal breakers for me.

and it sounds stupid, but I prefer the feel of the images, the 5d2 always felt dead to me. The 5d1 was much better for that, in my very limited opinion.

I am interested in a 5d3 though, if anyones offering to buy one for me.........

Buffer is a not so bad if you feed it the fastest CF card, no good for fast sport though. The screen is OK to check the histogram so that's OK. 1DIII is bigger but definitely NOT better in that regard.

As far as colours go, there is something very special about the rendering of Ds2. I can't quite explain it, but neiter DIII, nor any of the croppers I had could produce anything similar. I am very interested in 1DsIII as they are bound to become more afordable by next Focus.

And it seems, the dynamic range is not that much better in 5DII/III than the old gen, certainly no improvement in low iso shadows. why can't nikon do EF mount D800 version :bonk:
 
I used an old 512mb CF in the 1DS2 and the buffer was extremely slow, threw in a 400x and it was noticeably faster, good points from all especially about the eye fi card as thats a real bonus due to the 1ds2 having a tiny screen.

The colours from my 5D are more saturated and have slightly more contrast but I would say the 1ds2 is more accurate in colour rendition when comparing in DPP with the same PP, ISO noise atleast at 800 is generally indistinguishable between the 2.

Im still getting used to the 2 button menu system and pressing display to check a image then display and + to actually zoom.

Are there any good tips for custom settings for the 1ds2 I should try as I reset all the settings?
