5DII shutdown. 3rd party grip

My main two cameras are a pair of 5DIIs.

One camera I has a genuine grip - pricey.

For the second camera, after much research I thought I'd try a cheaper 3rd party variety for the second body (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260824010014&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123).

Ordered, turned up and looked good. Worked fine. THEN, during a blimin wedding of all things the camera shutdown. I removed the cf card for safety, then the battery, re-inserted another battery but no joy - the body would not power up. I then remved the grip, replaced the battery flap and bingo she powered up with no issues.

I'm currently trying to return the 3rd party grip as I simply don't trust it. I appreciate that it may not have been the grip - but it feels too suspicious.

Although it wasn't a major problem as it was the end of the day (and I had the second 5d, and a 7d in the car) it did knock me!!! I guess you could say character building.

I have another wedding Saturday, so I'm off to Jessops to get another genuine 5DII grip.

Anyone else had similar problems?

my meike grip from linkdelight is still going strong, likewise the meike grip on the 20D which has been on there for years is fantastic.

if youre going genuine, dont overtighten the screw. been a few horror stories of having to cut them off after getting stuck/stripping the gears.

Something in the back of my mind is telling me there have been similar reports on here before of 3rd party grips causing cameras to stop working, not sure if it was Canon or Nikon related though.....

A quick read up and there seems to be a general problem with 3rd party grips not being able to accurately report the status of the battery, in a couple of cases leaving Nikon D700s dead (but powering up again when the grip is removed ) with their mirrors stuck in the open position, necessitating a trip back to Nikon to sort them...
 
I had a problem with 3rd party BG for my 5D2. Wouldn't correctly report the battery info. and would sometimes come on telling me that it couldn't communicate with the batteries. Sent it back and bought a genuine one and not had problems since.

Although that's a Nikon - it's enough for me not to use a 3rd party grip. I can't afford for things to fail. Thanks |Graham.

I had a Hahnel grip on my 50D. It was OK to begin with but then started working loose. This cost me a few pictures and had it happened during a write to the card the card would probably be toast.

When I bought my 7D I got a genuine one and had no problems with it.
