5Dmk1 owners with the mirror fix

Hey all :)

I could really do with a decent sized and decent quality of the mirror assembly inside your 5dmk1 after the mirror fix has been carried out.

Over the weekend a piece of metal was found inside the camera :eek:

I can't see where it could have come from, but the right hand side of the mirror looks suspect. There's a small metal strip along the left side of the mirror, but noting on the right except for what looks like a thin smear of glue.

So, help me out here guys :)
 
I've read about this somewhere, now I only need to find out where it was, but I'm pretty sure the guy mentioning this went straight to Canon about fixing it

I don't have my 5D anymore but I did take a picture when it was fixed I believe. I'll dig it out later this afternoon for you.

EDIT: there should be a piece of metal on each side so I would be willing to bet that's what you found....

Mystery solved.

What do you plan to do about it? Keep using it as it is, send it to Canon or stick it back yourself?

The body is the oldest one we have and it's already been fixed by canon once after the mirror fell out completely while shooting an event. It's a few months overdue replacement because the mk3 came out later than hoped and at a higher cost than expected. It still shoots ok, so it's consigned to second body use behind the mk2 we have.

Just got to decide if the improved AF and slightly improved iso handling is worth so much more than the cost of another mk2 :eek:

Fair enough, I assume they glued the rear as well with better glue than it came with so it should hold. They probably would stick that bit back on free of charge though?

I guess it all depends on planned usage. I got a mk2 just before mk3 was released and am surprised mk2 price hasn't really fallen. I guess that is because the mk3 is in another price bracket (or three...).
 
I've had a mk2 for about 2 years now, and that tends to get most of the use. MK2 has held it's price really well, and it should....... it's still a cracking camera for it's designed purpose.

The vast majority of the work we do is in cabaret clubs where the lighting is dire at best, so being able to focus and shoot in low light is the major factor.
 
Sounds like it could be worthwhile.... maybe borrow/rent one to see just how much better it really is? It's quite some investment! Sure it would be better but if the 5D2 is good enough.... Also, I know it's got lots more AF points, but is the central one any better?


There is something about the 5D1 that I miss now I have the 5D2... it might be the pleasant surprise every time I reviewed the images on the PC. I expect the quality from the 2 and it doesn't disappoint. Maybe if I used one again I would remember the agonising buffer flushing time or the tiny screen and awkward menu.


Or there is always the "buy glass instead" argument. I like that argument mostly because lenses tend to hold their value.
 
I would definitely contact Canon as that is not wear and tear, the replacement of the mirror assembly was defective as the glue has not held.

I reckon there will not be a problem anyway and they will agree to do it at their own expense.
 
Just bought a 5D mark i...and it does not seem to have had the fix...was being used as a spare...so hasnt seen much action in the last 2 years...

Is it a judgement call whether to send or not to Canpon...or a no brainer...right now Im thinking 'no brainer' as I think itll be free...

I have had two and neither of them had the mirror fix, my way thinking was that if it ain't broke why fix it, just send it in when it does break.

That could be inconvenient for some but for me it would not have been.

I also read that it mainly affected cameras being used in hot humid countries, so reckoned it would be ok in our climate.
 
Well our 5d classic threw the mirror clean off during a new years eve event. And now the fix failed too :D

The body is now a back up as it was replaced with a 5D2 :)

Maybe just the way I read that...


I got it for a good price with the canon battery pack...

So happy as a pig in the proverbial right now...!!!

All this talk of 5D Mark 1 makes me drool. I'd really like the FF experience but the concern I have with the 5d is this very issue.

Also coming from a 40d, admittedly no spring chicken itself I worry if I'm stepping back a litte in technology. As someone else pointed out maybe the investment should be in glass not a body.

I wish :(

I bought it new, would have preferred a mk3 but as there's no stock due to the gaffer tape recall I decided to save a packet.
 
Ah...it was late at night...and I thought you'de been 'REALLY LUCKy'...what more can I say...!!!
