5dmk3 & 24-105L - good concert combo?

Hi

I'm just wondering if anyone has or would consider shooting a concert with this combination? I know that most people would say try to get at least a 2.8 zoom, but with the 5dmk3's decent low light capability would f4 really be too slow?

If anything seems ideal to me as there would be more keeper shots not worrying about missing focus?!

Thoughts please!
 
That's gonna depend what kind of venue and lighting you have. I reckon you'll get lots of good shots at a gig with proper pro lighting, but you'll struggle if it's in a small dark dingy club.

My experience this year was that 2.8 lenses required at least 1600 iso for gigs in a club with very poor lighting. Crank that up to 3200 for an f4.

I've heard great things about the 5D3 & 6D, so if you're happy with iso3200 quality, go for it.
 
The 24-105L would be fine for the well lit gigs.

But many a time I have shot shows in gig venues where I am at 1/125th F2.8 ISO6400 so there is not much wiggleroom in loosing any light.

There is also AF to consider. Where you are already low on light, loosing a stop and subsequently all those extra cross type sensors, can limit your options somewhat.

Would I consider using the combo? No, it would compromise my ability to get the shot too much.
 
I fell back in love with my 24-105 after taking it along with my 5D3 to an alldayer a while ago. The lighting was almost nonexistant so I had to use a flash but the photos turned out great. I've been asked by 2 of the bands if they could use the photos for promo work and I'm in discussions with one of the bands about shooting an album cover for them.

If the lighting is good you will get some great shots with the 5D3 and 24-105, if the lighting is bad then you'd more likely need a f2.8 or better lens, unless you can use flash.
 
A low light shoot was exactly the scenario in which my 20D and 50mm f1.4 got more good shots than a 5DII with f4 zoom, in fact the 5D shooter got nothing.

It all depends on... high ISO usability and the light levels though.
 
I purchased a 6D + 24-105 kit and quickly replaced the 24-105 with a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC. The 24-105 is a good kit lens, but the Tamron is sharper, vignettes less and suffers less distortion at f/2.8 than the Canon does at f/4. Both feel equally well built and the cost difference is pretty small between them.

The one area you do lose out in is 70-105mm, and this may be an issue if you are far from the stage. Otherwise the Tamron is equal or better than the Canon for just about everything.

But in answer to your question, yes 5D3 + 24-105 will do a good job.

Not my main area of photography at all, just be nice to shoot a concert knowing I won't struggle as I have done in the past with a 600D + Sigma 17-50 2.8.

I wan't to keep the 24-105 as its a brilliant lens for video, which I'll be shooting a lot of but will defientely be looking to get some more prime lenses too! 135mm f2L looks nice.
