I keep reading how bad the outer focus points are on 5DmkII. I know it's not all cross type like the xxD series, but how is the 5DmkII AF compared to XXXD series?

Is it same AF mechanism or different?

the AF in a 5d2 is about in line with the af in a 50d (my upgrade path) the only issue is the points are the same relative to each other, so are all in the middle of the viewfinder

should **** all over a 450d but I havent used one since before I had a 50d :p

i came from a 500d.

autofocus generally isn't much different from a 500d in terms of speed. in terms of accuracy, i would say that the 5d2 is better, and with the outer points, as long as you lock them into something which has good contrast, they are very accurate, however, the further away the thing you're trying to focus on the less accurate/more easily confused they become.

if you want, i can post some crops of something which have been focused with the outer points.

i actually use all the points on my camera as circumstances dictate. the centre point is the best one to use in difficult conditions but all do a good enough job.

i've never felt that the autofocus on my 5d2 was a step back from the 500d. a little bit of a step forward in servo mode where the extra assist points to seem to do a better job of keeping up with something moving.

i take lots of photographs of little children running around and my 5d2 keeps up just fine.

the af on the 5d2 certainly isn't as bad some would have you believe. it can be very accurate indeed, even at f1.4.

I've moved from a 450D, to a 50D, and now a 5DII, and to be honest the AF hasn't ever let me down on any of them! From what some people say you'd think anything faster moving than a brick wall would run rings around it, but that's not really the case.

Yes, I'm sure it's better in the 7D and 1D series, but I'd say that unless you're out shooting lightning fast things all day, the AF will probably still result in fewer errors than the odd user malfunction ;) :D

Thanks for the replies guys.

%90 of the stuff I shoot doesn't move so I very rarely use ai servo mode. As long as it locks correctly when I focus in one-shot I will be happy.

I went to jessops today to try out 7D and 5D but unfortunately someone had dropped the 5D previously and it was vignetting heavily (like an ef-s lens attached) on the viewfinder so couldn't really test it. It was still firing but I didn't trust the AF accuracy.

with regards to 7D, I just couldn't figure out how to choose a single AF point :D

Thanks mate, I am not too fussed about it. If you say it works I take your word for it :)

As I said in the other post, as long as it doesn't miss focus in good light I am happy. I am happy to use centre AF point for night/low light stuff.

I only grumble about my 5d2s af because my backup was a 1d3, in the end I sold it so I'd stop expecting the outstanding performance :p
