I currently have no camera body and I am just trying to decided if a 5DmkII body is worth the sacrifice of having to sell my 70-200 f2.8 IS mkII.
That would leave me with a 17-40 and 24-70 lenses only, ie no long zoom.
It's kind of a silly question as I don't have a body at all at the moment so none of the lenses can be used anyway. :'(
 
Most things I have read say don't do that. Not saying you are wrong though. I'm evaluating both the 7D and 5D2.
I still couldn't afford a 7D though without selling a lens. I have about £200 spare cash + whatever I can get from selling a lens.

Another thing with the 7D is it makes the 24-70 a bit of a funny range for walk about/general lens. I found it excellent on the 1.3x crop 1DmkIV but I tend to favour a wider rather than close in shot.
 
A 5DmkII body is certainly worth sacrificing your 70-200 f2.8 IS mkII if the alternative is 3 lenses and no camera.

Joking aside - if your 17-40 and 24-70 are going to provide you with the range you need for a high % of what you do then it's a no brainer.

If on the other hand you're going to be looking for a longer lens again within 5 mins of getting your 5D2 then it's scruples time.
 
Yep Phil that's exactly my problem, I will be looking for a long lens for aviation.

It's really annoying me trying to work this out. I'm off to Mallorca on Saturday and will almost certainly be with any camera. :'(

Is it a 5D2 that you really want.....

.....will you want longer than 200mm on a full frame body ?

If the answer to either is yes then I'd say it's an obvious way to fund the body.


Aviation doesn't scream 5D2 to me but it depends what else you want to concentrate on I guess.
 
Well about 50-60% of what I shoot is in the range of what the 5D2 is ideal for, ie travel, landscape. The rest is aviation, some motorsport and I shot a local marathon last year and want to try more of that sort of even. I shot the marathon with the 1DmkIV though so I doubt either the 5D or 7D would produce shots anywhere near as good as that.
That's why it's not clear cut which is the best body to get. The 1DmkIV was an idea all rounder but I really couldn't justify the £3000+.

What about an older version ?

I love the AF on my old minty 1D Mark 2 and unless I'm printing HUGE it's perfect.

I'm hankering after another 5D2 myself for landscapes but can't be bothered with the cost just now. I was going to get rid of my 40D but love the extra reach for 'still' birdies yet for moving subjects the AF on the 1D2 kicks the 40D and 5D2 into touch so I have to keep both :lol:

As said - Funding the 5D2 with the 24-70 would be another option and unlike loosing the 70-200 - you could replace it with something EF cheaper as a stop gap.
 
Trying to read between the lines... ;)

You want a 5D2. Ideally, find the money from somewhere, keep the 17-40L, 24-70L and add a Mk3 Extender to the 70-200 Mk2. Very, very nice outfit.

Realistically, sell the 70-200 to fund the 5D2, then replace with a 100-400L as and when.

Edit: if needs must, maybe sell the 17-40L? The 24-70 will be usefully wider on full frame, perhaps enough for you temp? The heart of every outfit should begin with the sensor size - it defines everything else - so start with the right camera.

Keep the lens and go longer without a body. You know a new model will be out later this year or some time next year, and at least in the mean time you wont be worrying about "Is this lens soft"! :nuts:

And if you want to do RIAT with only a 200mm, don't bother going to the show ground, go to Rhymes farm in stead. FAR better view point and MUCH cheaper! (And no fair or Tri riat crap to distract or spoil the background). :naughty:
 
I'd go with the option suggested by Hoppy. 70-200mm on a full-frame would not be an ideal aviation lens in my opinion. So sell it, and get a 100-400mm.

As for 24-70mm on a 7D - I use it all the time and am very happy with it. I complement it with the 10-22mm EF-S lens, once I'd got over the thought of owning an EF-S lens, it's probably my favourite. I have a 70-200mm too, but I find it too short, even with a 1.4x extender on my 7D and its crop factor for Aviation work.

But for me a 7D would make more sense for Aviation shots, Birds in Flight and Gen Purpose work than a 5DII. I didn't like the AF compromise in the 5DII so went 7D as a long term interim. A 5DIII might float my boat and encourage me to upgrade if it comes with an improved AF system.
 
If you've got 200 spare cash now, Why don't you buy a cheap Older EF Body 20d/400D? Then wait till you can get a 5dmk2
 
Look at what hoppy said about selling your 17-40. On a full frame camera 24mm is pretty wide if your used to 17mm on a crop sensor. Selling this alone won't be enough but a couple of months scraping cash or selling a few other bits and bobs around the house on the bay might provide the proper funds. I wouldn't get rid of the 70-200 you will miss it too much!
 
You could buy a second hand 5d mk1 still good upto iso 800 and a 1d mk 2 and still probably be £400.00 in pocket over buying a new 5D and maybe a £150.00 over a secondhand one. What about a 1d mk3 again about £1200 remember for sport the 5d mk 2 is only 3.9 frames a second and the Af is better on the 1d mk2. Just thought i would muddy the waters a little more :D

My choice would be a 1D mk4 i love mine ;)
 
I can lend you a 10D for a while if that will help. At least give you something to use until you either

a) raise the funds for a 5DMk2 or,
b) decide which lens to sell.

I realise it isn't the same as a using a better camera, but I only have the 10D as a spare.
