Just testing the high ISO of the 5DS R on subjects that it was not marketed to handle. :)

Chestnut Munia (Lonchura atricapilla)
by alabang, on Flickr

The Chestnut Munia (Lonchura atricapilla) (formerly considered as a subspecies of the tricoloured munia Lonchura malacca atricapilla), also known as black-headed munia, is a small passerine bird. This estrildid finch is a resident breeding bird in Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Hawaii.

Before 1995, it was the national bird of the Philippines,[2] where it is known as mayang pula ("red maya") because of its brick red patch on the lower back which is visible only when it flies. (This distinguishes it from other birds locally called maya, notably the predominantly brownish "mayang simbahan" (tree sparrow)[3] which is more common in urban areas.)

Agree - I am surprised at the noise & softness

f5.6 and 1/320th - though

I'm sure Paolo has some more (better) shots

Maybe some movement with a 800mm lens and a slowish shutter speed making the picture a little soft. Noise doesn't seem that great though.

Agree with all the above that this is not the best image ever but at iso 2500 it looks ok (?)

Depends really on how big the crop is and what NR has been applied really.

Looks a promising image to me and props to dolina for sharing..

The noise and softness has washed out all the detail, (including that in the bird)

Hi Bill

Not sure that I agree. I think that there are: a. too few pixels-per-bird for much detail to stand out, and: b. the body/lens combination might be front-focussing a bit.

If you look at the bird's left claw it looks a bit more in-focus/detailed than the rest of the bird which is, in the main, behind this plane.

As ever, I might be wrong ?

Not my problem anyway since I am highly unlikely to ever own this body/lens combination !

I do not have a DOF calculator handy but is it likely at 800mm f5.6 that all of the bird would be in focus ?

Paolo taken very good images - he will tell us what he thinks when he gets back on

Some explanations for the soft-ish image.

- flickr is known to compress images
- 500px is not known to compress images. see link below
- ISO range of 5Ds R is 100-6,400 with H for 50 and 12,800
- I have not shot in 2 months
- 50MP will require shooting at a higher shutter speed than usual despite IS being ON.
- first time to shoot with 5DS R mounted on the 800. I did a test focus at night to verify compatibility with the lens.

Those who want to toy with 5Ds R RAWs can do so by downloading my images from this link.

BillN_33, very kind of you. :)

I can confirm that cr2.54 is absolutely jam-packed full of detail but then it is of a big static dog at iso 320. Shows the potential of the sensor though in terms of cropability. Thanks dolina for providing the links.

Thank you for the links with the RAW files, always wanted to have a look at a few, detail is amazing in them!

Edit : Just downloaded the really under exposed image of the Sparrow, great to have a play with the dynamic range of the camera! Really appreciate uploading some real world files like this (y)

Thanks gary and joe. We all improve from the kindness of strangers.

For those considering the 5Ds R it is an awesome camera for the following reasons

- Customer or technical requirement for 50MP
- Compatibility with affected 800/5.6 and 200/2.0 lenses
- Low-Pass Filter Effect Cancellation
- Anti-Flicker Compensation
- User-Selectable Shutter Release Time Lag
- Movie Servo AF on a full frame body

yes Paolo - but the main question is - is it good for birding shots??;)

Bill, the last full frame I had was a 5D Mark II so the 5Ds R is virtually that body with 2x more MP and better AF system. A lot of survived with the Mark II with birding so I do not see the R as any different. Just make sure you pack a 128GB 1066x card as the thing just swallows GB.

I added Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM image samples. These were taken at a party with a 580EX II attached.

This was where I encountered an “Err 20” when I shot stills after taking 3 to 6 minute videos. Hopefully this can be solved with a simple firmware update.

Other image samples include Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM and Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM.

All of the images shared are not how Canon marketed the camera to be used as. ;)
