Hi,

Bought one of these for a bargain price and looking for some advice.

I have a 190cx3 tripod and 682b monopod.

Will I need new ones or will the correct head suffice in combo with above for shooting our avian friends and the odd cricket match?

Sorry is this is a stupid question, but want to avoid spending £500 on a tripod set up if poss

It needs to go on my Gitzo. It won't work very well at all on anything else....;)

Kev.

I think its the 5542ls. It was expensive, but worth it. Rock solid.

try it first, my redsnapper has been fine with heavy stuff (old 2kg lens + a77 + gimbal), and my rb67 too.
the added weight does mean you really need to be careful tightning the clamps and getting everything right, as things go wrong quicker with the extra weight xD
getting it balanced will help alot too.

your lens is probably around 3.5 - 4kg though?

Try 6! Plus a 1d makes 7kgs!

Thanks Gary will give this a serious look.

Did you get the dg1, 2, or 3 head.

My cal says the tripod cost £120? What a bargain!

The Gimbal head i use with the D3S and 400mm f/2.8 is the Beike BK-45 which was £40 used from Ebay but theyre new for around £60

I did buy a ballhead as well, this one here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331060124139?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 for £16 i cant complain and it has an 8kg capacity

Really pleased with it, legs were a little stiff and occasionally one was quite tight to open but a little washing up liquid freed them up nicely, been told that a minute spray of WD-40 every few month is ideal to keep the legs smooth.

What will you be shooting, primarily, with the lens?

Gimbal head and a tripod without a centre column then.

Get yourself the best tripod you can.I have the Gitzo 5541LS and its as solid as solid can be.Also as others have said get yourself a gimbal head.A 3 series tripod from Gitzo should be ok as I have heard of several using it but my 5 series Gitzo is fantastic with the 600 f4.

Sound advice.
Yep I use a 5 series gitzo & a wimberley mkii head. Never regretted my decision for a second which is very rare.
