60d remote flash firing ?

ok, so i have my 60d and 430ex speedlight here in front of me.
Its probably something very simple, but i cant get the camera to just fire the 430ex without the built-in flash also firing.
I have gone into the camera settings, ie,
flash control,
built-in flash func setting,
wireless func,
selected the middle setting displaying one flash gun,
but both still fire ?
the 430 is set in slave mode and ch 1 and the camera is also on chanel 1 and firing group "all"
Any ideas ??
 
Are you sure that the on-camera flash is actually firing or just sending info to the 430 pre-fire - it's so fast it would look like it's at the same time. You'd have to take a snap to check where the lighting is from to be sure of what you're thinking is the case.

So will the built-in flash still look to fire but look weaker than if the camera is set to built-in only ?
If so then you are right, i have just tried it and if its set to built-in only its firing a full flash, but set to off camera, it still fires, but as you say its not at full power.
I thought it had to be something simple as i have gone through the settings for both several times.
 
A simple way to check is to take a picture of an object with remote flash and on-camera switched on and then with on-camera switched off. You should see that their is no light source on the object that was directly from the camera in the second instance - yet the on-camera flash strobed very fast to send the wireless info to the remote flash.

Or shoot into a mirror. ;)

But you might still see it. It should be weak enough to not make a difference to the exposure though. And set your 430 in group B, the onboard is always in group A IIRC.
But if you're planning on doing this a lot, get a YN622tx and a 622, it'll make life lots easier.
