60d review posted on DP Review

As you'd expect it's a comprehensive review, and based on my limited use of the 60D so far (1 week) I agree with them in pretty much everything.

So far in my experience:

  • Overall it's very good, and a really nice improvement from my 400D
  • It has very good IQ at low ISO
  • It has good high ISO performance - maybe not quite up there with the latest from Pentax, but impressive.
  • The loss of the joystick from the previous xxD is a bit of a backwards step (apparently Canon claim the new pad works better for grip users)
  • The screen is really nice, and I think its ability to articulate will present some interesting creative possibilities
  • It has good battery life
  • It feels 'right' in the hand
  • Good AF
 
It's a shame to see them going on about plastic v metal especially as along with others who go down this route they don't seem to present any evidence at all to back up their prejudice.
 
...but there's no escaping it does look at feel better. You do notice that coming from a xxxD to a xxD. Is it stronger? Who knows.
 
Handled one yesterday in PC World and seemed ok, not sure about that double control wheel and still prefer the feel of my 40D though

Overall I prefer the smaller size of the 60d to the 40d. I agree the old joystick is nicer to use than the new 8 way controller, but as I don't switch between AF points that much I don't think it will affect me much. Also hopefully the new controller is less susceptible to water ingress than the joystick seemed to be. Time will tell.

From the look of it the ISO performance isn't that far away from the K-5.

I must admit I have been toying with the idea of a 60D for macro .. that articulated screen along with the ISO performance and a MP-E65 would be a killer combo imo.

They did mention it a couple of times, but I didn't think they laboured the point too much. I agree with you though, it doesn't bother me at all. There's nothing wrong with engineering plastic, and it's lighter.

Yeah, you could use magnified live view to manually focus and high ISO to allow a narrower aperture for better depth of field. I think that would definitely work well.
