Since selling my 7d i'm downsizing
Looking at the 60d but fear it may have too many pixels for my glass to get top results, is the 50d a viable alternative for iq and high iso performance as i shoot gigs
not too concerned about the plasticky body on the 60
Opinions please
 
Not plastically at all. Feels solid but it's not the feel of the 7d which is all I can compare it to.

Nice body!
 
I bought a 60D as a second body for shooting concerts.
Here's my thoughts recorded after my first time out with the 60D.

For concerts I use a 5DII with a 24-105 and the 60D with a 70-200 f4 IS L. Both are carried in pouches big enough to allow me to keep the lens hood atached; it's great as I can put one down and pick up the other with no delays.
Here's a recent concert - the mighty Status Quo at Glastonbury Extravaganza.
Here's a recent festival - Bristol Folk Festival - the 60D was flawless.
 
Please explain me what is the point wasting money selling 7D at loss, then buying something similar but inferior? The maths don't add up here. 60D has 7D sensor, just less functions and worse AF. I don't have anything better to say about 50D. I wouldn't call it downSIZING either.
I'd be looking 1D or 5D way for better low light performance.
 
Why do you make out the 60d has a worse autofocus? I don't think it's worse!

Because it doesn't have 19 cross type af points and all the other great focussing stuff the 7d has. If the 60d was as good then nobody would buy the 7d! ;)

Reasons for thinking about a 60D... several reviewers have said that the 60D has slightly better noise performance than the 7D and if posts on certain rabid forums with three letter names are to be believed lenses mounted on 60D's don't seem to suffer and need MF and there's always the articulated screen... that could be useful.

I don't really understand the OP's worry about pixels as it has the same number as the 7D.

I think your missing my point. It's your choice of word. The AF on the 7d is more advanced than the current 9 points on the other Canon bodies.

Nope. However you look at it the af system in the 7d is better than that in the 60d.

I've not sold my 7d at a loss, replacing it with a 60d has freed up some money for lenses
I was after something with similar quality but less technical
I don't mind shooting manually but for everyday shots and changing subjects i think the mode dail on the 60 will come into it's own for me
Nobody rate the 50 against the 60 then? or is it much better?
 
I don't think the 60 is much better than the 50. If you don't need video go with the 50. It has a few things the 60 don't like micro af adjust and a mag alloy body. Iq won't be much different at all.

I know it is I just think the use of 'worse' is the wrong thing to say as this means all other canon bodies are worse.

Shall we say less good then? However you look at it the 60d's af is at a lower level than that of the 7d. That means it is worse. Mind you so is the 5d2's, but that has advantages over the 7d. But if you find the 60d adequate for your needs then don't worry about it, its what you can do with it that matters. ;)

Check the DPReview test results - there's quite a difference in IQ at 3200 ISO.
For the OP to shoot concerts, this may be important.

I've seen a lot of 7D owners battling with confusing focus modes.
60D focus is identical to the 5DII - basic, but plenty good enough for my needs.

I can get good shots at 3200 with my 50d. Just gotta get the exposure right and then a small amount of noise reduction.
 
I too get very good results at 3200 iso with the 50d. As above, expose right or it will bite back! Process in DPP and I get images that are very clean and detailed.
