Just trying my 650D with my 430EX and 580EXII. I cant get the 580EXII to work at all and although the 430EX fires, if I go into External Flash C.Fn setting it tells me its incompatible. 580 works fine with my 1D and 30D.

SURELY this cant be right??

silly question but what does your external speedlight section say in the cameras menu? is it set to fire? does it recognise the flash at all?
 
Flash Firing is set to Enable. I cant access the External Flash func. setting or External Flash C.Fn settings, when I try it says Menu cannot be displayed incompatible flash. If the 580 is off (but with switch on) if I press the 650D to fire the flash senses it and switches on but doesn't fire.

and flash works perfectly in other cameras? Sounds like a peculiar firmware type issue with the body.
 
I often have this problem on my 7D, In my case its simply forgetting to place the flash in slave mode? mike.
 
I've just put my 580EX II on the wifes 650D to check and my flash was recognised and I was able to take a couple of shots which were at the flash's previous settings. I went back into the flash settings to change them and it came up with a message saying there was no flash or it was powered off.

I turned both the flash and the camera off and back on again and it worked fine again. I changed all the setting about (zoom, wireless, ETTL, EV etc) and then took some more shots and they were perfectly exposed.

Try remounting the flash again or power down and restart and see what happens then. This was the first time the 580EX II has been mounted onto the 650D, usually it has a Nissin Di866 if any, but after that first time it seems to work fine every time now.

Thanks for that. Tried it but nothing.
 
I have now found the problem. If I leave the 580 loose on the 650, and lean the flash backwards it fires. If I secure with the sliding lever it doesnt. Clearly there is an issue with the contacts.

Anyone know if there is an adjustment I can do without returning to Canon?
