6D ?

where are you! I have the 6d but dont have a decent macro lens, you would be welcome to give it a go it you are close enough, I am in Shropshire!

following this thread with interest both cameras are great choices from what I can see.

7d mk II definitely better for in flight. 6d better for ISO Low light though 7d is supposed to be good too.

Think I'm leaning towards the 7d route personally.

I am on the South coast - thanks for the offer but I think to far unfortunately to meet up.

Yup!

I use the 6d with the mpe :) awesome set up :)

Interesting i was thinking the ff and the better iso handling might be better then my 650d. What is the ISO useful to in natural light ? Wondering if a trade in for this for my camera might be an option with the MPE.

Yes I have mixed feelings;

Stay with current camera.

Go with FF as i don't need AF, and with flash the frame rate don't mattter. But in winter wildlife the fps is handy and af might be sometimes handy with 100mm NL. However the 7d mklII is expensive.

The new 5D's way out of question. Maybe a 5Dmk II ? Or is the ISO performance better on 6D for price ??

Might be worth waiting for 5d mark 4 that will drop the price of everything. Then get any of the above including 5d mk 3.

The only reasons to go full frame (as far as I can see) are improved low light shooting, reduced DoF and a wider angle of view.

I was wanting to go full frame for a long time but I'm more at peace with the crop sensor now. I think in some scenarios it can be advantageous and there are more lenses (and cheaper) available to me - although I have a tendency to buy FF lenses in case I ever do upgrade (probably not good practice, I'm likely missing out on some quality EF-S options).

I think if you are spending thousands on quality FF lenses they probably deserve a FF camera.

Having used the 6D I can say it's amazing for low light and noise performance, but for macro I would have thought out of those two the crop would be better.

5dii < 6D.

In what way is it better ? Is the ISO noise performance better on the 5 ?

Thanks Tim - I was thinking for noise at higher ISO's for natural light with the 100mm and the wider/larger field of view on the MPE ?

Thanks. It is the noise I partly thinking about it for.

I thought the 5d Mk4 was now those 5Ds's. But waiting for them to be available will have an effect. Good idea on waiting.

6d has better low iso perf and low light focusing. The sensor is a generation newer as well.

Yeah, wider field of view for the MP-E was one of the reasons I was wanting FF. I currently lack anything in the infinity-1:1 range though, which I was thinking I could fill with a long macro (150mm+). The Venus lens makes a compelling addition here too.

I'd mainly want a camera for wildlife, and the best conditions for wildlife are usually low light (another argument for the FF), but when I saw the ridiculous frame rate and amazing auto-focus system of the 7D II, it made me lust after one of those above the sluggish (in comparison) 6D - (not that's I'd ever shoot things at high speed, you understand, it's just to make me feel more manly).

Again it probably comes down to your shooting style. If you are going for early morning, low light, soft, tranquil wildlife photos the 6D will probably serve you better. If you want rapid chase scenes, dragonflies, BIFs or the violent clashes of rutitng season, the 7D would be the way to go.

I want both!

Now you have explained it like that I think I could go with the FF 6D - as the sluggish frame rate is what I have on the 650D - and for macro I can get away with it - esp with flash recycle on MPE, a bigger burst would of course be nice for dragons etc but 5 fps will suffice. But in winter I do like shooting wild birds. So yes I want both too now! :wacky:

HA ha! And round and round we go. Now, is a 6D AND a 7D Mark II still cheaper than a 1DX? :P

I have to agree with this. My 6D is a cracking camera but for macro i do prefer the pixel density and crop factor of crop sensor bodies over my full frame body. Plus there are times when a tilting screen is a must which you lose with the 6D.

Indeed, the tilting screen would be amazing for macro. I've gotten into some strange positions and had plenty strange looks to try and capture bugs whilst looking through the view finder:D

Have you got some sample images ?

I will admit the tilting screen is handy. I use it occasionally for flowers to stop neck crink. Do you think the detail on the crop sensor is better (and what camera body) ? My current camera is a 650D.

I've been accused of being dead a few times...

I admit to looking at the 1Ds , expensive and old ones seem not worthwhile for cost.

They are great shots and am impressed with the noise on those high ISO. Find 650 usable up to 800. 400 ( previous stop is best high one).

Boing! :D(y)

Thanks for the examples - even ISO 5000 looks excellent.

My thinking is now having a higher useful iso for natural light stuff would be handy in not good weather etc. Plus higher shutter speed on breezy days.

...And get an M3 when the price comes down for all your High Res, crop sensor, tilty screen macro needs :)

It's more anecdotal than anything else and more to do with me being behind the camera :)

I have the 600d as my past camera and the tilting scren was very handy! i have not tried this yet but the wifi with the 6D means I dont need a tilting screen, the Ipad works as my screen and I dont even have to be in the smae room! I am not bragging, being cheeky or anything like that, just pointing out that the tilting screen can be overcome!

Wonderful but you can't move the camera and hold iPad and sure the delay between the 2 for focus reasons is a pita. Camera WIFI is renowned for being featureless/slow and unbearable.

But the point I am making is if you set your camera up in an awkward position, the IPad will let you view to make minor adjustments. I wouldn't use the IPad on insects and the like, but it would be ok on still life, plants etc.

Indeed it's good for some things for example i use it for astro photography or birds at feeder type situations. Never found it practical in most macro situations with the exception of inanimate objects. Live view and tilting screen wins easily.

If you do venture into using the Wifi i highly recommend the Chainfire app DSLcontroller (http://dslrcontroller.com/). Far more powerful than the Canon app which is actually not bad at the basics but DSLcontroller takes it a whole step further.

thanks for that Sharky, I went to give it a bash, but was informed the App store is unavailable at the mo! lmao, just my luck.

So @ChrisA what did you choose? I very nearly clicked purchase on 7d mk II earlier on interest free credit. But I might wait for price to come down a tad or have some better deals of free stuff.

I've got GAS bad and was looking to swap a number of lens for upgraded versions then thought what's the point of having great glass on my 500d.

Snap sort rates 6d as better but guess it's preference.

I still am thinking about it. I think I will wait until the 5Ds is launched and see what the prices do SH. 6D is probably where I might go - then again I might stick with what I have or see what the 760D is like. FF would be nice, but for me it is about noise performance.

Always invest in glass over camera is my motto, as lenses last a lifetime.

Not had the best experience with some of my glass though one lens didn't even last a year without getting a potential lifetime issue of mould.

A lot of people think a crop body is better for macro but using both for macro (50/70d and 6d) I find the 6d (FF) far better.

Mainly because I can stop the lens right down to get the DOF I need to get as much of the subject in focus as possible as I can raise the ISO without compromising IQ.

That said, I hand hold 100% of the time.
