I opted for the Epson V700 for scanning my old stuff in as I have stuff on transparency up to 8x10. It seems to be about the most cost effective way of doing it and the quality is great
Like everything in photography it depends on how much you want to spend
If your on a budjet then Epson 4990 or 4190 you should be able to get 2nd hand
Canon 8800F (I think) is another which seems ot work ok, no idea on price
Going up a bit is the Epson V range V700 the more expensive V750 and I think they have just brought a new cheaper one V300.
All the above ones are all flat bed scanners which you can use film holders to scan film from 35mm (not very good) all the way up to 10x8 inch negs/slides.
Film only scanners if you have the money Nikon 9000 (new over £2K) which is the best, with out going to silly money.
Other than that Epson 3200f (used only now and not common) or the rare Microtek 120tf/ Polaroid Sprint Scanners which will happiley do 6x7 and bigger.
I got an Epson 4490 last month for 35mm and medium format film. Was about £130 new IIRC.
35mm scans are acceptable, but not great if you want them big. Medium format is quite decent though!
