Ok before i go and spand £1600 on a Canon 70 - 200 2.8 mk 2 ....

how much diff is there between the mk 1 and mk 2 ..

is the mk 2 worth the extra cash
 
There is a good difference, but I would check samples and reviews first.

I did the same as you and initally I wanted to be wowed by the sharpness increase. While the sharpness was better, I was actually wowed by the:

IS improvement
Drastically improved quality with the 1.4 extender.
Contrast Improvement

so worth the out lay then ...It will be used with a 5d mk 2 ....
 
I did get that feeling when I bought the Mk2 if I really needed to upgrade. The trouble is when you have the Mark I knowing it does underperform at f2.8 and having an improved version available to buy means you'll just be wanting it forever.

As yourself, do I find the sharpness at 2.8 a problem sometimes. If the answer is yes, then upgrade.

Out of interest, what's your upgrade costing you? I spent £600 and overall I'd say it was worth it.
