I am after a 70-200 2.8 Lens. I've hired the Canon 70-200 2.8 (non IS) for the last few events, but it's now getting to the stage were I could possibly justify buying one.

The non IS versions appear to be harder to get hold of (especially within budget), but I've noticed a couple of both Sigma and Tamron versions available.

Has anyone any experience of these models? I use a Sigma 20-40 EX 2.8 for my boxing work and it's pretty sharp, especially when on my 5D.

Of course, I understand that Canon Glass will always be far superior, but any feedback or comments on a non Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens would be appreciated.

Oh - and I was also looking at the 70-200 f4 Canon glass, but as I will be shooting low light quite a bit, then the 2.8 is really what I'm after.

That is exactly what I am looking for (and the right price too!) Can't seem to find any under £850 though.

Can I ask where you bought that from?

I can get the Sigma for about £550
 
we've got a pair of the sigmas (both "macro" v1) and they hold up very well, cant compare them to the canon as never owned one but we used them for the bulk of our work and are always happy with the results they kick out.
 
I've seen the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 on fleabay for a shade over £500 quid.

Tempting as the 17-50mm I have is stunning, if it's anywhere near as good as that, it would be a cracking lens! It would be good to hear of any feedback on it :)
 
Yeah, stay away from the tamron. Have used one briefly and it was slow and noisy compared to the sigma 70-200 and canon 70-200.
 
I need a 70-200 f2.8 and have found the Sigma with OS for £770 brand new.

Is there going to be £1k difference in the glass?
 
Interesting info, looks as if it's Sigma if not Canon in that case.

Shame, I love my 17-50 altho it is noisy.
 
Bought the Sigma. Very, Very impressed with it. Even in low light it's pin sharp - especially on my 5D.

Mine does have OS, yes.

To be honest, I used the non IS version of the Canon and never struggled without it, so didn't see the need for it.

Cracking lens.
