I'm looking at a EF 70-200mm f2.8L Lens not the IS as it's too expensive, I will be mainly using to take pics of the family, portrait and candid and whatever i like the look of really, but I also like the look of the 100-400L, and wonder weather a 2x conveter will be as good on the 70-200 as the 100-400L when I need the extra length as I think the 100-400L is to hefty to lug around when out walking about?

Just to add I'm using a crop sensor, just wondered if anyone has this setup

The IQ won't be as good. The newest most expensive 70-200ISL II is supposed to be very nearly as sharp as the 100-400 when used with a 2x, but the older version weren't reported as being brilliant.
It's a relatively cheap way to get that focal length though, and certainly takes up a lot less size and weight than having two lenses.


FWIW, the 100-400 is only 70g heavier than the 70-200 f/2.8L non-IS, and about the same size when at 100mm.

What Adam said. Go to www.thedigitalpicture.com and you can load up side by side comparisons of all those combinations and see the sharpness, or lack of, for yourself.

The f/4 version of the 70-200L works quite well with a 1.4x telecon, but is not so good with a 2x and you also lose AF which switches out above f/5.6.

I've had or have all of the above and I doubt you will be too happy with the 70-200f2.8L with a x2TC attached, IMHO, the images are fairly soft unless seriously stopped down.

The 100-400L gives far superior images.

I have had two of the 70-200f2.8Ls (IS and non-IS) mk I and two 100-400Ls now and this result is reproducible.

Have also had the 70-200f2.8ISL mk II and with a decent x2 TC it gives images very close to the 100-400, again IMHO. But this lens is expensive.
