Does anyone own or had anyone tested this lens? I've read good reviews about it and wondering if I should be getting this lens over the sigma or tamron 2.8 lenses for my d7000.

Is it much more compact and portable than the other 2.8 lenses? This extra portability is a plus point.

The obvious thing going against it is the constant aperture of f4 instead of 2.8. I don't think I will miss the extra stop as I will mostly be using this lens for outdoor work. Should I need an extra stop I'll just up the iso.

The other thing is price. I don't want to spend more than £900 on this lens so the nikon 2.8 is out of the question. So I'm looking at 2nd had sigma, tamron or the nikon f4.

Anyone have experience of these lenses and can recommend one over another?

Hi. I had the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 vr2 and it with the f4 version. I'm very impressed with the f4 lens, very sharp, a lot lighter and vr3 is amazing. I have also tried it with my tc17 and it works great.

I noticed that 90% of my shooting was at f4 anyway and that with the above points made my decision a lot easier.

Hi
I have the F4 version, can't compare it to the 2.8 'cos I've never had one but what I can say is, the lens is tack sharp and portable (a lens collar isn't needed). Image stabilisiation is very good and the trade-off for 1 stop is worth it (to me).
I think there's a thread somewhere on here with a few images

Some photos I took with the 70-200mm F4 + TC17

So if my maths are correct...

Nikon D7100 DX is x1.5
Extra crop mode makes total crop factor x1.95
Nikon TC14 is x1.4

Total ratio is x3.35 x 200mm resulting max zoom of 670mm at f5.6?

420mm. (Actual view is still 200 x 1.4 = 280mm, but that's another story.)

200mm x crop (1.5) x converter (1.4)

hth.

Love mine. And it goes with my TC14 as well. Sharp sharp lens. In fact the best that I own. Was going to buy the 2.8VR2, but why bother? And the VR in the f/4 allows you to shoot at 200mm at 1/4s if you are carefully.
