Just got the above lenses and been looking at getting a tripod ring for it

But the canon ones are a £125!!!!

Yea what a rip of how do they justifies it.....

Are the after market ones on ebay any good has any one tried them

They justify it because it is genuine and not made from cheap materials by children in a sweat shop getting paid next to nothing <and breathe...>

Anyway, as Rick has pointed out others are available for a lesser amount and genuine ones can be found for a good price.

The main reason I wanted a genuine one was that I didn't trust the one that came with the lens and didn't want to spend over and over getting the wrong one time and time again. Oh, and the fact that when I use it it is holding onto £2k of camera and lens!
 
Thanks Yea understand but belong as its metal end of the day its a simple device.

So that's what made me think are they worth it don't mind paying extra 20 for piece me mind not 100...

The 70-200 f/4 is quite a lightweight lens though, do you really need the tripod ring? I have a 3rd party one i got with my 100mm macro, not quite as good as an original Canon but does the job well enough and at no where near the price of a genuine one.
 
I bought this one from Ebay. It fits and works very well, the only down side was a strong chemical smell on the unit when it first arrived...this has gone now.
 
Should these be dead tight when tightened up or should they still rotate round the lens

The lens dose not flop around but when the ring is tight to Max it dose not lock on to the lens so you can still turn it but dose the job the lens dose not flop around and you have got to actually turn it
 
Mine is tight when locked, but can be loosened to turn the lens for portrait/landscape orientation

Fortunately I already had a 400mm f/5.6 which uses the same tripod ring as the 70-200mm f/4 IS, the 400mm comes with one as standard

It's a little bit front heavy on a tripod, it's not a huge amount but it's enough that it makes it more unbalanced than I'd ideally like.
 
Yea I thought that it should be locked tight. And you have to unlock it to rotate the lens.

So my responses to the ebay ones ...

Yes it should lock tight. Mine does and I can't tell the difference in operation from the genuine Canon version that came with my other lenses.
