70-200 IS or no IS?

f/4 I presume?

Will you be shooting mostly fast moving stuff?
Will you use it in low light for static subjects?
Will you benefit from weather sealing (another plus of the IS)?

the F4 IS has weather sealing? thought it was just the 2.8 that had that?

low light is doubtful .. fast moving stuff is likely
 
IS is supposed to be sharper than the non IS, but that is probably debatable. Has 2 modes of IS for panning, which seems to work for me :)

Must admit though that it makes a funny noise when IS is activating, don't know if its a fault on mine or its supposed to sound like that. I personally would not be without the IS on mine.
 
I hired a f/4 is when I went to see a bit of amateur bike racing at snett, and had the is turned of for most of the day. A very nice bit of kit.
 
its my brother .. he wants to shoot MX (he rides at weekends) .. so his subjects move fast hes not sure if its worth it or not and i said as far as i knew IS was useless on moving subjects
 
There is a panning mode on the is. I've taken a few pics of mx and they don't seem to travel at a great speed and normally you can get quite close to the action. If it were me I would go with the non is and be very happy.
 
Yes. I had both. The IS has weather sealing.
 
and the weather sealing will protect against dust aswell .. as theres alot of **** on an MX track ..
 
Which camera is it to be used on? I didn't think the 7D was particularly well weather sealed?
 
a 50D .. its my brother ..

7D is mine - and not weather sealed? are you nuts lol its probably the best weather sealed
 
If there is a lot of fine dust blowing about I would stick it in a plastic bag - helps to keep some of the dust out of the (camera) controls - it's much easier to stop it getting in in the first place than get it out afterwards!
 
For those prices, get the non IS :)

I got a f4 non IS on Monday for £360, 2 shots after putting it on I got this handheld (I have been told by a few though that I have a steady camera hand).

which was moving pretty fast, not as fast as MX but still I was pretty impressed.

IMO the f4 non IS represents superb VFM and if on a budget you cannot do better, it focuses lightning quick.
 
i picked up a non is version yesterday for £370 from the bay. have to say it is superb, fast and sharp. have to keep an eye on my shutter speed but it isnt a problem so far. also using on a 50D.
the IS version really wasnt in my price range so i didnt have the option.

You won't need the IS for motocross, and the weather sealing would be practically useless if it was bolted to a body without weather sealing (50D). The IS version I found a teeny bit sharper than the non IS but there's very very little in the IQ between the two.
 
he said he has been offered one for £650 so might buy it just for the saving as he could probably sell it for more than hes payed for it
