cracking lens might be a little long on the d300,

no probs, you will really love one if you get one, on the d300 its so sharp its unreal, on the d700 its not quite as sharp but pleanty sharp enough, and does suffer from vinetting a little a wide apature on the d700.

An amazing lens on my D300s. Sharp, fast accurate focus and colours are just great. A bit heavy though

I've always thought this lens shines on DX. Don't get me wrong it's a good lens on FX, but I've always liked to shoot it with crop sensors more. I've got the MKI version btw.

May be a bit of a silly question this people (and apologies to the OP for going slightly off topic), but, where precisely do you grip your 70-200 lens with your left hand when shooting hand-held portraits?!
I tend to grip the tripod mount with my left hand (set at the '7.30' clock face position, i.e. at 225 degrees) as I prefer it to the alternative 'typical' end of the lens position. Any thoughts on this?!

I usually take the tripod mount off and just grip under the kens as usual. Or I have tripod foot on bottom of lens and rest that on palm and use fingers to zoom.

take the tripod mount off, much easier to hold, means that you can rest the back of your hand on the bottom of your (gripped) camera and hold the lens properly.

I use the 70-200 VRII for wedding work and its great for outdoor portraits and even group shots if you have room. Some people use it in the studio and it really is a very versatile lens.
The 85mm prime is also a very good portrait lens IMO, lttle shorter than what would traditionally be considered a portrait lens, but does a very nice job.
