I've had dust in several of my lenses and it's never shown up in any pics.
Could the specs be flies/dust/pollen in the air?
Guessing it's a very expensive job to get fixed, as you have to take the whole lens apart, depending where the dust is, 18 months on, you might get a contribution from Canon under EU law, no harm in asking.
