I have already a 18-70mm, i'm looking for a 70-200mm or 70-300mm lens and i really want this for sports/wildlife type of work.
What's the best route Sigma or Nikon ? i have about £350 to spend and would love a f2.8 but obviously too expensive and want the nearest thing.

I would have a look in the for sale section I am sure I saw a sigma 70-200 2.8 for about £350 iirc
 
You will probably have to keep your eyes peeled for something 2nd hand. You might find a Sigma 70-200 or a Nikon 70-300VR for £350 if you're lucky. Check the For Sale ads here as a start, then move on to Mifsuds, Ffordes and similar to see what they've got in stock. Moving (slightly) downmarket, the Sigma 70-300 APO is supposed to be a decent performer as is the 70-300 Tamron. Not sure about their AF systems with regard to your D60 though.

Thanks, i'll keep a look out, i'm selling the D60 to fund it, i bought the 18-70 from filterfantastic but heard bad reviews.
 
Nikon 70-200s are a bit pricey but if you shop around you should be able to find A) a Sigma 70-200mm, which is a good, solid lens for the sort of thing you're looking at shooting, or B) a Nikon 80-200mm AF-D, which is optically better but has a slightly slower AF. The Nikon will be more expensive than the Sigma but both are good lenses.

Another good buy is the Sigma 100--300mm f/4, which has extra reach over the others but with a slower max. aperture. These are about a grand brand new but maybe you'll find a half-decent one used for around £500 if you hunt well. That's a maybe though...

F/2.8 lenses really are something else compared to 'standard' 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lenses - optically they're superb, the feel good in the hand and give you a really bright viewfinder, which ultimately helps AF speeds.
 
With £350 to spend I would go for the Sigma 70-200 EX HSM 2.8 which you should be able to pick up second hand. There are a couple of versions of this lens both of them are great for the money you are talking about, you will not be able to get a Nikon 2.8 for £350 in that zoom range.
 
I would go for the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX DG non macro, if you find you need more reach later on you can get a 1.4 tele-converter for around £100 which will give you 280 f4 mm full frame or 448 mm f4 crop sensor

You probably could pick up an older "one touch" Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 for around £350....

Mifsuds currently list a Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 ED One Touch for £349. So it seems there may be hope for Ilford!

Which is a nice lens, but does require a different thought process to use effectively, but once mastered it can be very efficient... although it's been many years since I've touched a one ring lens.
