Hi I am looking at getting the canon 70-200mm F4 non IS and the 2x canon extender. Will these work together as I have read the information and am not 100% sure that it will i.e. AF Thanks in advance

My understanding is that the 2x convertor loses you two stops of light, so an F4 lens will effectively become an F8. This means only a 1D series body will retain autofocus ability and then only with the centre focus point.

John is correct. It will work, but not autofocus. The image quality will suffer too. The 70-200 works quite nicely with the 1.4 though!

Thanks I was looking at the 1.4 but someone offered me the 2x and said it would be ok but when I read the information I was concerened as you have agreed that the autofocus would not work. Back on the look out for a 1.4 then.

DO NOT DO IT! The 2x is awful on a 70-200. It'll ruin it. The 1.4x works fine though.

Another vote for the 1.4x

Another vote for the 70-200 plus 1.4. I took this at the weekend with this combination:

As above, the 1.4x TC works well in good light with the 70-200mm f4, so effectively giving you a 98-280mm f5.6 so it would still autofocus on a XXXD, XXXD, XXXD, XXD and XD canon bodies but you lose a significant amount of autofocus speed and the lens would hunt (trying to find focus).

The 2x TC loses 2 f-stops, serious hit on autofocus speed and you lose image quality as well and would only autofocus on a 1D series camera body, although you could use manual focus.

This is interesting, I'm going to consider buying a 1.4 too since I just ordered the 70-200 and am selling my 70-300 IS in the for sale section now
