70-200's - Canon f4 or Sigma f2.8

I'm going to buy a cheaper 70-200 in the next week or so, looking at spending £300-400 so intrested in the above two lens. I've had the sigma before and I love the bokeh when stopped right down but it is quite a big and heavy lens. I mainly shoot portraits both casual and studio.
I've been sat on the fence for weeks and hoping I might be swayed either way, basically go for the smaller, lighter and I assume slightly sharper canon or go for 2.8 cabilibilty of the sigma.
I do wonder if shots like http://m.flickr.com/photos/studioworks-uk/6589013705/sizes/o/ would be possible with the canon.
 
Mark, I did own the Sigma before moving to the Canon, its a good lens and if I were in your shoes, I'd go for the 2.8. I know its heavy but it should give you more versatility.

you cant do a f2.8 shot with an f4 so the answer is no..

however if you mean can you get great bokeh with an f4 then yes of course.. even better in my opinion.. smoother creamier.. a canon L lens will always beat a sigma for quality...

however given the choice of those two lens i would still go for the sigma.. the 2.8 will always win... better to have and not need 2.8 than to need and not have :)
 
Yea proberly haven't worded it too well in relation to that shot but to me its DOF that made it, just wondering how it would compare at f4 with the canon.

When I bought my previous sigmas I always convienced myself it was better to have the 2.8 and not need it than not to have it at all but then I never once had to use it at 2.8 purely for the shutter speed, only cause I wanted the smallest DOF possible and now I wonder if having a lighter lens would be more benifical when I was out for the day with the kids. Think perhaps I need to go and have a feel of the canon to make sure I'm not putting too much emphasis on the weight difference.
 
I have both (picked up a Canon f4 for a price that would have been rude not to have). You won't get that sort of bokeh with the Canon but put the two side by side at f4 and the L lens is quite a bit sharper.

TBH I was pretty gobsmacked when I saw the image quality of the Canon lens.
