Been trying to master the AF expansion on my 7d but finding it quite hard. I keep getting OOF shots. I've tried shooting a half marathon and some Motorsport but hardly have any keepers :(

I've used a 24-105 and 100-400 and struggle with both.

Is there any way when in AI Servo you can get the circle/dot AF confirmation show up like in auto mode to confirm focus?

For what you are shooting, single point AF would be best, I only use expansion for shooting small birds in-flight with a plain background, you can't get focus confirm with AI servo as it is constantly focusing.

Ok thanks, I would have thought expansion would be better but it's all new to me atm. Forgot to add I also shoot alot of football. Will try single point.

That makes sense, only thing I find annoying is that I can't figure out if the subject is in focus or not.

If you disable "display all AF points", you will get a clearer view & should be able to tell if the subject is in focus.

Thanks JM will look into the settings

I don't think I've ever used all the focus points on my 7D for anything. For most shots I use a single spot focus point, whichever point is closest to where I want to focus. For BIF and small (or distant) airplanes I use 9 point focus with a big enough DOF to get everything in focus and I'm getting a fairly high keeper ratio now with this system.

Thanks again, would you recommend spot for football? I thought the idea for spot was for macro photography.
