Off to Scotland at end of July (thread here. If anyone is an expert on Midges please advise http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=329174)

Will need a lot of storage capacity. The cards I have at present are Sandisk Extreme 8GB. These are expensive. Typically £40 for 8GB. They are capable of handling everything the 7D can handle at them in terms of burst mode, video etc. But if shooting landscapes in Jockland why do I need all that?

Is there any reason why I shouldn't downgrade the CF for this trip?

Why not get these? i use the older ones that were extreme 30mb's on my 7D and dont have any issues with buffering.

I agree, the Sandisk Ultra are superb value and do the business. I use them with high burst mode all the time with no problems at all. The only time a faster card helps is if you are filling the buffer up.
