Hi I've got my 7D set to back button focus and want to return it to normal shutter button focus but can't remember how and I've lost the manual:D

Can someone remind me thanks:)

The reason that I'm changing back is that I'm getting out of focus shots using AI servo but am sure its user error as one shot focus is spot on just want to make sure AI servo working on the normal shutter button focus before I mess about with the settings

Hi In AI servo focus on a subject near to you. Hold the shutter button half down swing camera to a subject ferther away. Take photo (you may be able to hear camera focusing as you swing. Check if photo in focus. If it is af is working ok

that's a good idea will try that
I have tested out the focus at home but can't find anything wrong it probably is me , user error!
Only seem to get problems with AI servo when I'm at the zoo
It probably is just me not pressing the back button focus properly or missing the Target in the heat of the moment
Thought Id put it back to normal shutter button focus then see how I got on

I had a similar problem with my first 7D but it seems fine on my new one. I set both a 5D2 and 7D both to BBF at the same time and got on perfectly with the both in one-shot and AI Servo on the 5D2 was also perfect. The 7D seemed to take too long to focus properly and I missed a lot of shots. In the end I reverted both back to the shutter button for focus as it was too confusing having one on BBF and one on FBF.

I eventually sold both the cameras and bought a 5D3 which was set to BBF in the first week and used like it ever since. I added a 60D and had no problems with BBF on that either and recently swapped the 60D for another 7D and thankfully that's fine with BBF as well. I was wondering if it was something that had been fixed with the new firmware update but if you've done the update on your 7D then obviously not.

That's what I've been getting on certain shots AI servo not getting focus
I only occasionally use it so may just be me missing the focus point
Going to find some moving subjects next week to get some practice in :)
Have changed back to shutter button focus now hopefully that will sort it

The focus button shouldn't make a difference, check that you're not using spot focussing. That's not really suitable for AI Servo mode. Depending on what you're focussing on there's a lot of options with both focus point expansion and focus priority.

thanks Phil will check that about spot focus it is one of the options that I've enabled on the Q menu have turned it on by mistake sometimes have now disabled it
this time of year I'm photographing zoo animals have set camera to single focus point will start off with that
:)

i only use spot focus for stationary people or objects and full auto 19point for sports photography 19 point is handy for taking photos of my mates bmxing

Maybe I did make it sound overly complicated :bonk:

Basically in landscape mode (normal camera orientation) I use the AF-ON button and have this on a single roaming focus point normally the top left, I have the * button next to it set to the fixed top right focus point and you can bounce between the two depending on which focus button you press.

In portrait it's the same just on it's side and at any point you press the joystick button in and it'll bounce to the middle focus point, press the joystick in again and it'll bounce back to the roaming focus point :cuckoo:

I also leave the camera in 'one shot' and if I hold in the dof preview button it goes to AI servo, you can basically bounce around 3 focus points quite easily and switch it into tracking if your subject starts to move.
