I have seen references in threads regarding 'Link' battery grips (link), these seem to rate the Link grips as a decent product.
On looking at them on eBay, I noticed another Link grip, this one Linky
I was wondering if anyone has tried this model and what you think of it, did you find the extra timing options to be of any use or is it just a gimmick, and is the quality ok, or at least comparable with the non timer model.

I've not used either of those Trev, so I can't really comment other than that for me a battery grip is a must and I always get one with the camera, or very soon afterwards, although I get the OEM one.
 
I'd stick with the Canon one I've seen cheap ones for Nikon and they really are not that secure as they flex and crack easy due to the cheap plastic build.

But between these I'd go non timer it will only break after a while and become a pointless addition if all you want is better grip
 
For interval timing etc...I'd get one of these...

It's a bit pricey, but pretty well unlimited in what it can do.
 
The other thing Trev, and I' think it would be remiss of me not to mention it, is that the battery grip for the 7D is far nicer on the camera than previous grips in the XXD range - it looks and feels more integrated with the camera design. It's also weather sealed to the same standard as the 7D.

You've forked out for the 7D and the 500m, which will both cope with the worst weather conditions, so I wouldn't compromise the sealing for the sake of the grip?

Trev forget the timer unless you want to do interval shots of flowers and stuff :D

I got a Meike on from a guy in the UK for my 5d2, it's in every way identical to a Canon one at a fraction of the cost.

A number of peeps have seen it and agree it's top notch.

I've had mine since September last year and other than occasionaly having to switch it off and on again at the top it's performed perfectly.

Thanks for the replies, and yes, it all makes sense what your saying. At this time I dont need a timer but if it was an option on a decent grip it would be there for the future if and when. I have never had a grip on my previous cameras having been content to carry a spare battery in my pocket.
I suppose you get what you pay for once again. OK, it an OEM one then for sure, will start looking at the prices and get one ordered.

I got mine from 'Happy sales UK' through 'Amazon', works great, no probs, £69.95 all in.

When you're buying really good quality kit like the 7D and the a big super telephoto, I wouldn't compromise on anything. A chain is as strong as the weakest link. Also you might find that IF you had a repair issue, the use of a 3rd party accessory might invalidate your warranty.

I had trouble with a Marumi ringflash which thre up error 80 reports. I replaced it, admittedly at considerable expense with an MT-24. Now I don't worry and I get excellent pictures.
 
Greywoolf I'd agree with you on kit like flashes and lenses but a battery grip is just a fancy battery box with a few switches.

I've had 3 now for my camera's and none have caused problems or damaged the camera. All of them seem to be moulded copies of origionals.

If you take your thoery to an extremem you would only buy Canon lenses for Canons or Nikons for Nikons.

All other makes of lenses are third party :D


ps. I have all Canon lenses except my cheapy Tokina macro :D
 
I've used Meike grips on the 50D and 5DMKii - both excellent quality.......and about £50 delivered excellent value for money
