Hi Guys
Selling my d90 soon and seriously considering getting a 7d to replace it
How is the high iso performance on the 7d?
I shoot gigs in a dimly lit venue and have had to crank up the d90 to 2000 iso with very noisey results
Will the 7d be a big improvement at these levels?
 
Well my 50d is very good at 2000iso and useable up to 3200 as long as I process in DPP which seems better at converting high iso raws than cs3. The 7d is marginally better at high iso so I should image it'll be very good.
 
What do you consider as clear or noisy images? People can have radically different definitions. It may be acceptable to somebody to have OK 6x4 print, others need clean A2.

Also what lenses do you use? You should be using fast 2.8 zooms or even better primes in a dark venue. If not so, upgrade your glass first.

I had 50D and I found unusable at ISO800, let alone 2000. I now have 1D III which I will happily use at ISO1600 or even 3200 when needed, and 1Ds II which does near enough the same thing.

If you think you need a new body, think about D700, or 5D mark II instead. These cameras do actually have very good high ISO performance.

I was contemplating the 7d as i do a lot of wildlife stuff as well and would lose my reach with ff
Plus selling up my nikon gear and going back to canon

Like I said, the 50d is perfectly useable up to 3200, to say it's unusable at 800iso is complete tosh, sorry!!
 
D7000 is looking good
Might have to have a rethink!
I have been usin 2.8 and 1.8 primes but the lighting is so poor i need at least 2000 iso to get any sort of shutter speed
 
I'd agree, no point swapping to canon.

The D7000 also has a new focussing system doesn't it? I expect that would be a good upgrade from your D90 for the purposes you want.

I've used my 40D at 3200.

Far from ideal, but with a bit of cleaning I can get a nice looking A4 print or a flawless looking web size.

That shot by squishy speaks volumes about high ISO under web size conditions. Now I won't tell you to forget your 7d and go purchase a D3s with a 70-200 2.8 or even how to take photos at gigs....that won't help and it is not what you asked.

The 7d is very acceptable at 3200 with noise reduction applied. I even push it to 6400 and along with some work on it in LR3. DPP is a good way of reducing noise, I found it a bit slow to respond though. If you are shooting gigs and a lot of your images will be for web use then I'd be more than happy to keep it set to 3200. It would obviously be different if you are printing large! But even then I wouldn't mind a bit of left over noise as long as I got the shot I wanted.

7D, 1600 ISO, no noise reduction or any post processing, more than acceptable to me, a 100 percent crop and its still absolutely fine.

high iso performance of the 7D is not very good. 18mp on a small chip is not good.

The 7D was/is one of the best APS-C DSLR's for high noise performance.

had a look how the canon 60d looks at 6400 . wasn't that bad ! noise yes, it is there, but with a nice prime or at least f2.8 zoom, the colours are all great etc.

I respectfully disagree, based on viewing numerous comparisons that show the 7D having both less noise and resolving more detail.

It may resolve detail better, not suprised with that many more pixels, but images definitely need more careful post processing with such a crowded sensor.
 
Where did I say anything that involved changing the laws of physics?
 
What I have found is that the 7d is fantastic at high iso but is not very forgiving if you don't get it right in camera. If you underexposed in camera and you try to pull back the shadows it can really shows the noise!

It really has taught me how to concentrate and strive to get things right! Wouldn't swap my 7d for the world :-)
 
A shot under extreme conditions a chinese lantern on NYE 1/25 f6.3 ISO12800 handheld at 500mm ! OK you wouldn't publish it but the 7D can get a shot when you would think it impossible

No noise reduction. Exif intact. Images saved for web use. I'm very happy with the 7d at high iso. I will push 6400 if there is no option.
