7d noise low iso

is anyone else using a 7d and getting low iso noise hight red channel noise iso 800 or any low iso banding?
 
Will do once i figure out how to, i take i have to put them on fikr first or can i upload directly,

Note, i sent images off to canon uk an they responded say i need to send it off to a repairer, nearest 1 is glasgow, 7-10 day turn around, i hope they can fix it and its not inherant in the 7d because other than this issue it is a beast of a camera and i love it lol
 
ok here are some images, all 100% crops

1st one shows banding in shadow areas at iso 100, there is a studio light on the right hand side of the face so the image is perfectly exposed, no pp has been doe to this image

Were these shot as JPEGs or raw? If raw which converter was used?

Here's one of my 100 ISO 7D raws at 100% with a before and after of a hefty push to the shadows. NR and sharpening is all at Lightroom 4 defaults, with just the shadow push in the after image. Mine is one of the earliest cameras, bought in Nov 2009.

EDIT : Just found another shot at 100 ISO with no signal at all in the shadows, and again pushed to the same extent....

The push is not necessary for these images and only applied to try to reveal the problem.

It is best to do as they say. Those samples look really wrong.
 
Possible steps to reduce noise....

1. Expose to the right;
2. Do not enable HTP;
3. Do not enable ALO;
4, Do not enable LPIC;
5. Do not shoot wide open with very fast glass - e.g. f/1.4;
6. Do not shoot with light sources which require a large white balance correction;
7. If shooting to JPEG you might consider enabling a degree of NR in camera. If shooting to raw then make sure you use a quality raw processor which can by default deal effectively with noise.
8. Failing that use specialised NR software like Neat Image, Noise Ninja etc..

There's an old thread discussing noise in general (not for the 7D specifically) and a few of the ideas raised there are included in the numbered points above, but with a bit more meat on the reasons for some of them....

Golly :bonk: Wouldn't it be great if you didn't have to coax the thing like that?

Personally, if I thought that all that was needed for a camera that was working within spec I'd send it back and take up another hobby. Jeez. I've just sold a 7 year old 20D and own a MK1 5D that don't need that sort of hand holding and can be used at every ISO setting yet years after those cameras were built and sold this is what passes for mormal shooting? :thumbsdown:

That's what I felt when I [briefly] had 50D. I am now quite happily shooting with the dinosaur-cam and see no IQ problems.

But then the noise as illustrated is very uncommon unless the files are pushed by many stops.

Yes, my thought is that it must be some sort of "fault" or sample variation.

There are lots of reports of 7D noise some of which seem to be coming from people who appear to know what they're doing... yet others claim to have never had these issues. As some of those complaining of issues see an improvement after their cameras have been replaced or fiddled with this seems (to me at least) to confirm that there is an in camera rather than a user issue.
 
All shot in raw, jpeg show no sign of banding but still show awful noise,

Its definately going in for repair, this is im second lol as the first had a big dollop of fluff inside the viewfinder lol

You don't HAVE to. You may CHOOSE to. There's nothing wrong with choosing to maximise IQ if you want, or at the very least having a grasp of what options you can consider in order to nudge things along.

I always shoot raw and generally aim to ETTR(ish). That's the limit of my "coaxing". It's not really a hardship. It's just good practice for maximising the potential the camera (any camera) offers and I do it with my 7D, 5D2 and 1D3 equally.

It shows noise because it's an 18mp APS-C sensor lol

I'm sure that a 7D when working as Canon and the user expect is a joy but there does seem to be a rather large "?" over at least a percentage of 7D's in what seem to be otherwise capable hands.

This is very strange because my 7D never exhibits any of these problems, in fact always pleasantly surprised how good it is

Was there perhaps a rogue batch of friday specials, would be interesting to get the serial numbers from dissatisfied owners and see if they are all within a certain range
 
I wish my was right, ah well, ive a couple of shoots to do next weekend then its off to a repairer
