7d or 5d2

I need to do some video so am upgrading to either the 5d2 or the 7d. I currently have the 5d1 and a 50d which I'm selling to partly fund the camera. I have a 24-105 and the 100 is macro. Really want the 17-40 which I may be able to get but the issue is do I get the 7d. I would def have the funds for the 17-40 but then I am limited for a 2 body line up or do I get the 5d2 and wait for the lens a bit. I don't need the fps of the 7d. I'm generally doing wedding and portraits and products so don't need the af system. If I get the 5d2 I will only have 100-200 left so I'm kinda scuppered with the uwa but I would have as wide as the 7d with the 17-40 would be already and could save a bit more.plus I love the less noise of the full frame. I think I probably have my choice but just in case I haven't thought of something........
 
In your situation I'd go 5D2

The 17-40 on the 7D is no wider than the 24-105 on the 5D2 (17 x 1.6 = ~27mm)
Plus it's got truly amazing video quality.
The 7D is a fantastic camera for speed, but in your situation I don't see any advantages to it.

Yeah that's what I think too. Just a shame I might not be able to afford the wide. Perhaps I will find a way tho.
 
You can pick up Sigma 12-24 which go wiiiiiide for £300-£350 (as long as you like the effect at that wide an angle)....
 
Can't comment on the video quality but the 5D does have noticeably better image quality at all iso's when you look at 100% crops.

I had a similar dilemna but went for the 7D because of the autofocus and FPS.

For what you want I would go for the 5D.
 
In respect of your types of shoot, weddings, portraits and products, I would get the 5D2 and save up for the glass. In the 5D2 you'll have low light capability and more importantly, image quality.

The suggestion of the Sigma 12-24 somewhere down the line shouldn't be overlooked either.

To recap, you can't fail with the 5D2.

The comments confirm my thoughts.5d2 it is. Not sure about the sigma tho. I love the look of canon glass particularly the ls and I don't know whether sometimes its psychological but I just find myself disappointed particularly with the colours and sparkle of the shots with anything else. I had a tokina 12-24 for crop sensor and just never really liked what I got from it colour even tho many raved about it
 
An acquaintance lent me his 12-24 for part of an afternoon last year and I was shooting indoors. I know what you mean about Canon's more natural rendition of colours but the Sigma didn't phase me. It may have been the ultra wide aspect that impressed me of course.

Good luck tracking down your 5D2. If you don't mind going preloved, MPB Photographic is a good source. Alternatively, Canon have a refurb store on Ebay that now and again lists the 5D2 with a full 12 month factory warranty.

Hi I've recently been looking at 5D2's and, to be honest, these do not seem cheap used; probably only a couple of hundred less than what you can buy new for ?

Quite rightly so I might add. I appreciate they are really good cams !

I buy quite a lot of kit used but in this specific case I'm much more tempted buying new+guarantee.

Anyway, my main point, I do not do video but I do use the Siggy 12-24 and it is a quality lens and, obviously, gives awesome wide angle on any FF. I use on a 5d1. To me, most Sigma lenses give a slight yellow cast whereas the Canon equivalents provide more "natural" images. I'm not saying your vids will make people look like The Simpsons but such things are easy to tidy up in PP on photos but I have no idea whether this is possible on vids ?

Just a thought.

Agreed, I would go for the 5D mk II.

I have the 24-105mm and paired with this camera is the best set up I've ever owned.

I used to have the 17-40mm but found it too restricitive. The wide angle of 17mm on full frame is awesome though I have to say. I sold it in favour of the 24-105mm as the range is fantastic as a walk about lens on full frame.

The video quality is staggering, easily outdoes my HF S10 camcorder in terms of quality.

They hold their value too, you never see many for sale and when you do they go for a good price.

The only time I'll sell mine is when the Mk III comes out and even then the changes will have to be impressive enough for me to justify it! :)

Hi Mark, no chance of getting yours cheap then !

I've pretty much decided to hold out for the MIII now anyway. I'm not overwhelmed with the AF system on my M1 and I gather it is the same on the MII - I regularly use a mates. The rumoured release dates seem to be disapearing off into the distance though for the MIII. I dread to think what the cost will be also.

5dii from what you say. hig iso and depth of field over AF and fps.
