I am in the market for either a Canon 7D or a Nikon D700. Yes I know one is FF and the other 1.6x but I am more bothered while is the best for me personally.
I shoot, travel, aviation, some documentary. I hardly shoot any portraits and never weddings. I sold a 1DmkIV and 70-200 f2.8 mkII because I couldn't justify the cost. I still have a Canon 24-70 and 17-40 but would sell for a move to Nikon.

The 7D is by most accounts the inferior camera BUT it is quite a bit cheaper than the D700. I tried a D700 out in a shop yesterday and I have to admit it felt much nicer to use and hold than the 7D and seemed more of a halfway between the 1DmkIV and 7D. Sadly Canon just don't make a model in this price/quality/features range.

If I move to Nikon I can hopefully sell the 24-70 for about the same as picking up the Nikon version. The money from the 17-40 could go towrads the difference in cost of the bodies. I would then have to wait and add a 70-200 f2.8 at a later date because that would be way over my budget right now.
 
to be honest it kind of sounds like you know you want the d700, as you know it's a better camera...the fact that you've tried it in a shop and really like it means that it's probably only a matter of time ;)

I'm fighting a battle every day to not upgrade my d90 to a d700...believe me!
 
is there any reason you're not looking at the 5d- Or the 5dmk2?


The af isn't great, but the 5d1 is dirt cheap now, and the 5d2 has insane amounts of megapixels- so you pay your money and take your choice

although if it doesn't feel right in your hands then that's a good enough justification

although nikon menu's are hateful, I prefer the canon ergonomics, and the d700 is bigger/heavier than the 5d, so crisis averted...
 
The nikon produces beautiful images. Basically the same sensor as my D3s, and it never ceases to amaze me. The low light handling, the lack of noise, and as the saying goes, sometimes, less pixels is more!!!!!!

Got to agree, it sounds like you've already sold yourself the D700 and the problem now is that even if you rationalised to yourself you only need the 7D you'll always feel disappointed with it... I've just upgraded to a D700 and it is a stunning camera, every shot seems to just come out great with no effort at all!

The 5d2 is a good shout though.
 
The can only echo other comments the D700 is an amazing camera.
 
I moved from 40D to a 7D to get good high ISO performance. It's got great AF system. But, sadly I didn't fall in love with it. Wanted to move to 5D2 but wanted better FPS.
Now own a couple of D700's..it's a love thing. Very expensive move to make.

I get the feeling you really WANT a D700, but the 5D2 will probably do all you NEED.

It's a toughie...
 
The problem you will have with a FX body is not with your travel or documentary shots, but the aviation.

Yes FX can shoot action, of course it can, but you are into mega expensive glass territory to get the reach. Some kind of 300mm is fine on crop sensors but you'll find you want more on FX.

On the other hand, the D700 will excel at the other two things and if you have deep enough pockets, also be suitable for long range telephoto action.
 
What was the verdict from your last thread?

My suggestion is to get a cheap Canon body, 40D/50D and maybe a 70-200 to go with your other lenses and get out there shooting, then when Canon do release a suitable body get it then.

The last thread left me thinking that a 1DmkIV would be exactly what I need. :D Also that Canon don't really do anything like the D700. 7D is good for AF, FPS and 5DmkII is good for low light and overall better image quality. I am kind of looking for the best of both, with the D700 seeming to be the closest.

A new D700 is the best part of £2000. Selling my Canon 24-70 and adding a new Nikon 24-70 would probably cost me a net £300ish. So total cost around £2300. The slight worry is that for that price I could get both a used 7D and 70-200 f2.8 IS mkI for a similar price. A new 7D at over £1100-1250 seems in my mind more money than they are worth compared to say a D700. I owned a 7D a while back so I have a pretty good idea what they are like. If I could pick up a new one for £999 like Kerso used to sell them for it might be an easier choice. :thinking:
