7D problem ... Any thoughts?

Had a problem with my Canon 7D which I fear will need a little trip to the camera hospital, but just thought I'd ask you wise and experienced TP people if anyone's had any similar issues first ....

On a recent shoot, I managed to fill my CF card, but (unusually for me!) had a spare with me. So ejected the full card by pressing the little button in the card slot, but then could not get the replacement card to insert. It goes in to the point where it should seat into the connections in the base of the slot, but no further. Gentle persuasion won't work and I don't want to force it!

It was a dry, sunny day and the camera had been working brilliantly up to then. Thankfully I had my trusty 600D with me too, so a quick lens change and I was back in business, but the 7D is grounded from now. Anyone had a similar issue? Thanks all ....
 
Sounds like bent pins in the camera card slot, often happens from inserting the card back to front.
New part required although you may be able to bend a bent pin or pins back with needle pliers
 
Will the original card go back in or is it all cf cards?

Ouch! Definitely a trip to camera A&E required, as I feared. I'll have a look and see if I can see anything out of line, but not planning to attempt a DIY repair.

Gaz ... No ... Neither card will go in now. ... It's well and truly €$¥*!! If I've damaged it being ham fisted with the card swap, I'll be suitably p*+^% off with myself. Slapped wrists and lesson learned.

It just takes one tiny bit of grit or clump of dust in the card chamber and it causes the CF card to be ejected in an uneven manner.
Just make sure your next new camera uses SD cards, who cares about a couple of mb/s
 
Had a look at it now I've got an idea of what to look for and it does seem that one of the end pins is out of line. So, working on the theory that it's done for anyway and needs the attentions of a pro repairer, I've had a little gentle poke at it with a small screwdriver (:eek:) and straightened it out. (:)). The card now goes in but I fear I may have just made another problem further down the line because things which have been bent like that are never as strong again.

But it's now working, so that's a result at least. Think I'll still get it off to the repair people ASAP for a replacement part to be on the safe side.

To be honest, that's all you needed to do. I'd not bother sending it off, just take care when swapping cards not to force anything in.
I've lost count of the number of old VGA connectors fixed in this way, I don't see how a CF card slot is any more or less likely to spontaneously self destruct as a result.
 
Might be worth connecting the camera to your pc in future and not go changing cards if you can help it. I've never had it happen to me, not even on a card reader, but it happened to a guy next to me at an airshow as he was setting up for the day. He didn't have a backup body so he ended up just watching the planes all day and never took a shot, poor guy.
