A few questions about the 7D.

vs 5D2, better, equivalent, or worse high-ISO performance?
vs 5D2, overall image-quality better or worse?
vs 5D2, same screen?
vs 1D3, autofocusing speed of acquisition?
vs 1D3, af tracking ability?
vs 1D3, buffer on max RAW?
vs 1D3, richness of image?
vs 5D2, build quality and environmental sealing?

Why not look this up yourself on the internet instead of expecting others to do it for you?

Must be plenty of comparisons available on the net.

Yes there are, and yes I have read many of them. However I value the opinions of the people on this forum, and know that many of them will have been grappling with precisely the same questions that I am, and, unlike you, might be willing to share their findings and/or experience.

Yes, I realise my input was unhelpful, however I do feel that people should put a bit more effort in to trying to answer such questions themselves (8 questions!) with the facilities available on the net before expecting others to do so for them. The info is out there and it's easily available. After trying that route and not getting all the answers perhaps you'd have a couple of questions unanswered that BM's could help you with. Frankly speaking boards like this are fantastic but I also believe that they make people lazy to surf the info themselves and instead rely on those who willingly and regularly profer their time and advice.

yes your right it is out there, but he would like peoples ops from this site which he uses, and peoples ops on here mean more to me than reading it from other sites, where who know what the people are like.
so whats the problem.

also not everyone has the time to site there,

I agree with alastairb, having owned both myself.

I'm a little confused about this post.

From the questions you're asking, I would suggest that the 1DS MkIII is what you're looking for. You seem to want the best bits of both the 5D2 and 1D series.

You certainly ain't gonna get that from a camera that costs less than either of them, even if I do love my 7D to bits....

vs 5D2, for telephoto use? Better
vs 1D3, reach? Better
vs 1D3, rear screen? Better
vs 1D3, for wideangle? Better
vs 5D2, for flash with Canon Speedlite? Better

There is perhaps an element of that, but here is why I am asking, despite having read a trillion reviews. I own both a 1D3 and a 5D2. My principal photography subject is wildlife, specifically birds, for which I use the 1D3. I recently bought a 5D2 to use for travel, for low-light, and for photos and movies of my kids. I love the image quality, though in actual use, there are many many things I prefer about the 1D3. In the last couple of weeks I have come across two bird photography situations where the subject was still enough, and close enough, for me to use the 5D2 instead. I am stunned by the resulting images. Nonetheless, a 5D2 is about a million miles away from being a viable wildlife camera. AF is not in the same league, frame rate poor, I could go on. My ideal camera is perhaps a 1D4, in that it has the high ISO, the video capability, the IQ, the AF etc etc, but I can't really afford one. It would mean selling both current cameras AND needing to find additional cash, and then not having a back-up body. In any event, whilst I don't mind spending big $$$ on glass as it does not depreciate, I know that if I splash 3k on a 1D4, in two years it will be worth half that, perhaps less. All my cameras are second hand, and in the case of the 1D3, bought once the big hit has been taken. I can live with the more limited depreciation after that. I was therefore wondering if a 7D, available for under 1k used, might be what I was looking for.

I wanted a 7D. I bought a 7D and did not compare it to anything, was it a wise move? Yup!! ;)

If what you are looking for is 1D AF performance with 5DII picture quality, then no, the 7D is not what you're looking for. That's the 1Ds...
 
When I first got the 7D I did do some comparisons to my 1DmkIII, you can see what I came up with in a thread on another forum (hope that's OK). http://photocamel.com/forum/canon-forum/96751-putting-7d-test.html

You need to go to the 15th post to see the full review as I changed hosts and lost all the photos and links, it wouldn't let me edit so I just posted it all with everything corrected.

Any questions I will happily answer them as I'm still using both the 7D and 1DmkIII (and 5DmkII) for different things.

Because you own it, or are there specific reasons as to why?! I am basically in love with the image quality of the 5D2 (though the 10mp 1D3 is no slouch and brings a pile of great things to the table), and wondered if the 7D was an adequate replacement for the 1D3, or indeed the 5D2 itself.
 
Each of these 3 cameras bring something different to the table i own 2 7ds 1 5dmk2 1Dmk4 and i owned a 1Ds Mk3 and i still own a 5d mk1. I have sold images from all of these cameras so and they have been published and take it from me they are all good. For me The 7d can beat the other cameras in a few areas.
:naughty: Im now waiting for screams from some other owners of 1D range. For 1 menu set up of certain things how you access live view and the video spring to mind for one. Another thing is suppose like me you are photographing wildlife with the 7d with the 600mm fited you have an equivelant view of 960mm at f4 the 1D offers 780mm at F4 to get nearer in image size you fit the 1.4 to the 1D that now gives you 1092mm at f5.6 now to get the shutter speed back the same you up the iso one stop now compare images there is nothing in it. Some may argue to crop in the people who use my work require a digital raw file size of 12MB
The 5d is better in image quality but if you can't track it you can't photograph it don't get me wrong the AF isn't bad on the 5D but it is'nt a patch on the 7D and the 7D is a tad behind the 1d mk4 for AF though it is better than some of 1D mk3's you get good and bad bodies with this model
Another thing i like about the 7d is i can use my 300mm f4 for handheld flight photography this is a very light combination when i use the 1d Mk4 i normally use the 300mm f2.8 with the 1.4 extender this is a lot heavier.
To me the best of the bunch on image quality is the 1D Mk4 just and i mean just you are pixel peeping.
The best for sport and nature the 1D mk4
The best for landscape work and weddings the 5d my 17mm lens is a
17mm field of view
The best for jack of all trades master of none is the 7D it's cheaper than the others and brings a lot to the table.

:thinking:You pays your money and takes your choice there is no easy answer:D

You could print a image at A3 from all these cameras stand 4 feet away and you could'nt tell which camera had taken which image i tried this test on a group of photographers not long ago i also threw in a image taken with a D60 and i don't mean the 60D i mean the old one and no one picked that one out either.

From what I've read, the above seems spot on. In summary it totally depends what you shoot as to what body suits you best.
