The pop up flash can act as a master and send the signal to a 430EX II, what happens if you have two 430EX IIs one on the camera and one wireless, because the 430EX II isn't a master do you lose this functionality? So in effect it's best to have both flash off the camera and use the pop up to trigger them? But obviously need to hold the two wireless flash somewhere :gag:
 
I don't have any experience of having two 430ex2's but you would definately loose the wireless part having one mounted as the 7ds flash would not be able to pop up. Only other ways I can think of is to splash out on a 580ex2 or extend the range of the 430ex's with some sort of wireless radio trigger system?
 
You have to have the on board pop up flash active to activate the wireless flash utility. So if you want to use 2 x 430's then you need to have them both off camera.

You can control the power bias of them by setting them up in different groups, but ETL works fine. My mate has a set up with 4 flash units on his 5D using the ST-E2 and it works brilliantly. I very rarely now use my 430 on my camera, preferring to hold it in my left hand and shoot through a diffuser, or on a stand and bounce it off of a wall or through a brolly.

Ok so both flash off the camera it is then :)

My thinking was why can't the 7D just fire the flash signal through the 430 rather than the onboard. The onboard seems to fire an actual flash signal for the info to trigger other stuff.

Has anyone come across any good articles on using the multiple flash system? Ratios, whether exposure compensation effects bot or one etc?

There's a whole world out there waiting for me to nuke it with light ;)
 
Because the 430 doesn't have the "master" hardware/software built in, the 7D does, and so does a 580. To activate the wireless function on the 7D the onboard flash has to be engaged, so you can't make use of the hotshoe.
