I was just reading over a thread slating the 7D's noise (which I found quite bad myself) and other than saying never under expose the other general accusation was that their workflow was shoddy, so that led to to wondering what is a good workflow for the 7D to help deal with noise.

I'd be especially interested in a lightroom only workflow as I have access to many many 7D images and lightroom and if in my case it was a workflow issue then I shall stuff myself on humble pie and take myself to a darken room for a good thrashing :)
 
Try processing some 7D RAW files in DPP, it's canon's own software so can potentially get better performance out of the RAW files than lightroom. Just export a TIFF file from DPP with minimal processing then do the rest in LR.

Some people on here certainly swear by using DPP for higher ISO's. Personally with my 40D I didn't see a huge difference, but DPP definitely had an egde against RAW files processed purely in LR.

Thanks for the advice, but being lazy I'd now want to add another step if I could help it - hence lightroom rather than just going to photoshop and noise ninja or similar.

I do appreciate the advice though, but like i said being lazy I'd probably just steer clear of the 7D.

All that said, maybe thats what they meant by properly processed

It was this one, but don't let them put you off as from what I've read of that forum they're a nasty bunch.

Were it not for my little fall out with micro adjustment and the noise I would still own my old one as it was still a very good camera.

Aye, usually 1600/3200 (just checking lightroom to confirm)- I know pretty high.

lol, I hang my head in shame - I've just gone back over a few of my 3200 ISO and most clean up pretty well - a few are still shocking but I suspect other issue with those images.

Now compared to the 5D they're still rough as a badger's butt, but not due to the amount of noise, more the quality - as I've just gone on a wee pixel peeping trek on the 5D images too.

I think I know where my issue was - I used to pixel peep really badly when I had the 7D and with images that large (and often they were jpegs back then too) it doesn't help.

Cheers Dave I'll take a look at that, I'd heard of them but didn't realise they were a LR plugin too.

ah don't really think you can really expect to get decent images out of a 7d at those Iso the 5d would always be better I would have thought due to the FF sensor.
 
I know, I know :(

Interesting images there though, the 7D on there looks shocking at anything over 800, which isn't what I saw even with my own images - although that is a pixel peeping special, all being at 100%
