Anybody know if they're any good? I'm wanting a Manfrotto one, ideally, but they're a little out of my price range at the moment.

I got bought a Velbon CX440 a while back, and it is flimsy to say the least. The mounting plate and head bit is all plastic, as is the centre column, and it just wobbles about in the wind. The crank handle has broken off too, with it also being plastic. I think it was only £20 - £30 at the time, and you get what you pay for, so that's fair enough.

Just spotted this though:

I know it won't be a patch on the quality of a Manfrotto/Redsnapper/etc., but it looks like a complete bargain to me. Won't break the bank one bit, and it looks leagues ahead of the flimsy Velbon.

I think I'll get one anyway. Even if it's crap it'll do to stand an off-camera flash on (when I get one).

LOL. A well meaning person bought me one of these ages ago. The problem with it is the head is made of plastic - including the hinges. It's OK for a very light camera, but if you try to use an SLR with the head tilted to portrait mode you can see the plastic hinges flexing and the camera jittering and sagging. Overall about as stable as a blancmange.

After a respectable delay mine went in the bin. ;)

Ah, that was my main concern. It doesn't mention in the blurb whether that bit is plastic or not, and it's hard to tell from the photo. I won't get one then.

Still looks twice as good as the Velbon though (which I've managed with so far :D), and for half the price.

To be fair, the legs are better than you've any right to expect for the money and I can't remember now if it was possible to change the head, in which case it would make a light tripod for carrying about, but I still wouildn't care to use it with a heavy camera.

It's only since getting my 70-300, and adding the grip, that I've felt I needed a better tripod. With only the kit lens and nifty fifty the Velbon was working fine. So on that basis, I don't think it'll be of much use to me.

I will get a Manfrotto, or possibly Redsnapper at some point, but it's been an expensive month, and I wanted something that would do in the meantime. Especially since I'm experimenting with a 10-stop ND, and light graffiti. I think I need to do some saving for something sturdy.

Well this definitely isn't the tripod for an SLR and a 70-300 lens, it would be about as much practical use to you as an ashtray on a motorbike.

If cash is tight then the Redsnapper is probably your best bet unless you can find something 2nd hand on fleabay or elsewhere. Good tripods outlive the buyer easily. ;)

You get what you pay for with the cheaper tripods unfortunately.

I've got a Velbon 600R - about £75-90 and it's really nice

Redsnapper have had some really good feedback here though

To a point, I agree. But I do think the 7DayShop one seems much better value for money than my original Velbon one, even if it doesn't satisfy current requirements.

I've got a Redsnapper monopod, which I'm really pleased with. I was thinking I could get some Redsnapper legs, and then use the head that came with the monopod. Doesn't look like you can buy the legs without getting a head with them too though.

Doh! You can, I just didn't look far enough down the page. :bonk:

I have just got myself a new tripod so I have my old one which you are welcome to use until you save up for a good'un.

My old one is a Slik 88 Black Diamond. It is old, but is half decent. It should do you for a while.;)

Very kind of you John. That would be great, thanks.

We'll have to arrange to meet up for a play with the cameras. Are you free this weekend, weather permitting?
