hi guys just wondering what people thoughts are on the 7D's auto lighting optimizer function? is it really needed if you shoot RAW? i am learning the functions one by one on the 7D and this weeks auto lighting optimizer has cropped up, ive all ways left it alone on standard, but thinking to turn it off as i just done a comparision shot with it set to high and one set to off and cant see any difference really?

ALO only applies to the JPEG output. The effect varies according to subject (see example in handbook) but it's usually quite subtle.

The more controversial setting is Highlight Tone Priority that's applied to both Raw and JPEG so can't be undone. It basically trades an extra stop of highlight headroom against potentially a bit more noise in the shadows. Personally I think that's a pretty good deal but there are two schools of thought on it.
 
thanks guys, well ALO is pointless to me then as i shoot RAW, so thats off now :) not looked into HTP in the settings menu yet so will have a play with that and see how i like that enabled/disabled, thanks :) im not sure id like added noise for an extra stop tho? will see how i get on with it
