Hi everybody,
I shoot with a 1.3x canon 1dmk3, and usually use the 50mm 1.4
I also have a 14mm 2.8, a 28 2.8, an 85 1.8, a zeiss 135 f3.5 and a sigma 150mm 2.8 macro (and some random manual focus lenses)
the 85mm doesn't seem to get much use and i'm thinking of letting it go, but don't know if i'll come to regret it. I shoot mainly fashion/portraits, and actually like getting a little closer to my subjects with the 50mm (which is more like a 70mm with the crop). I've started covering more and more events and switching lenses in the field is starting to become annoying and will likely end up with me dropping a lens at some point. I rarely use the 85 for event coverage (only used it once), prefering to switch between the 14, 50 and 150 and do minor crops in post if the images are only destined for the web.
My 85mm is very sharp across the frame and focuses great, but I don't really see much advantage to it over the 50mm as they both have similar bokeh and the reach advantage isn't too great, just a couple of steps forward or a minor crop in post, for everyday shooting the 85's minimum focus distance feels limiting. I'm thinking of selling the 85mm and putting the cash towards a 135mm f2, a 70-200 f2.8 (maybe sigma OS), the tamron 24-70 or a 5d classic to use as a second body so I can use the 150 on the 1d and a 50 on the 5d.
Iso 6400 on the 1d3 is acceptable but 3200 is the limit for prints, so being able to shoot the 135mm at f2 rather than the 150mm at 2.8 would be a great help, but then i guess with the 70-200 IS I could shoot f2.8 but drop the shutter as low as 1/40 and keep the ISO lower too.
Part of my style is by getting in closer to the action rather than snapping from a distance with the tele lens, so I am concerned the 70-200 wouldn't really sit well with me, I'd like the bokeh of the 135mm although I never really use my current 135mm either, it's just too slow and MF is a pain, I have heard great things about the 24-70 VC but i've never tried it.
My concern is that if I start to do portraits professionally I feel I may be too close to the subject, or if I go full frame in the future the 50mm will be too wide and i'll miss the 85mm, I have such a great copy of the lens that i'm concerned i'll never get a good one again if I let this one go, but I really never use it.
My question is, does anyone that has a 50 and an 85 have a preference for either lens, and did anyone else come to the conclusion that 50 and 85 are too close in terms of focal length, and if so what did you do- 50 and 100, 50 and 135mm?
