85mm f/1.8 USM

I don't have one, but my Dad does and I have borrowed it a few times. It is great for portraits on a 5D.
 
2 lenses give you mega bang for bucks, the 50 and the 85 f1.8's. Buy it, you wont regret it, everything about it says L glass apart from the price. In fact its better than the 85L (cost/performance/af speed based comment). Slightly, very slightly soft wide open, sharpens up quickly about half a stop down.
It would probably be the last lens I'd sell.
I even have its older brother on an FD mount for my film cameras.

I have one in my bag, gets use on both full frame and crop cameras happily. Even with the pixel count of the 5DmkII there are no issues. I usually stop down to f2 or 2.2 to bring a little extra sharpness in but even open wide there are no major issues if used in the right way. Fast to focus, limited distortion making great value.

Not a really useful lens on a crop sensor with an efl of 135mm. The main uses are for outdoor portraits and indoor sports. Its a good portrait lens on a ful frame though.

Any particular reason? By this theory that would make the 135mm f2 on a full frame body an unuseful lens which it really isn't.
 
85mm is a great focal length on full frame and crop, just has different uses. The 85mm is a superb lens though.

Maybe not for you..

You wouldn't really write-off every lens above 50mm on a crop sensor because it's too long? would you?

Mind you, you've said it's useless and then gone on to suggest it might be ideal for outdoor portraits and indoor sports.. make your mind up :D
