Hi,

I am looking to get some Hitech ND grad filters and want to know if I will get away with 85mm filters in the wide-angle holder on the Sigma 10-22 (77mm thread) without any vignetting.

The 100mm filters are twice the price, so ideally would like to get the 85mm.

Does anybody use 85mm with the Sigma or Canon UWA lenses?

:help:

I bought the Hitech grads and have then in a slim wide angle Cokin P holder attached to the Sigma 10-20 using 77 Kood ring.

You get a slight vignette at 10mm but unlike the normal cokin holder (3 slots) you dont see the slim holder itself in the frame - you only get one slot though.

Dinners, do you, by any chance have a sample shot with the vignetting :D

I thought I had some examples to hand but the ones on this PC were all taken on the 17-85 lens.

I'll get a 10mm one posted tomorrow for you.

As promised......

Didn't get a chance in daylight today so just quickly shot these for you.

40D - Sigma 10-20 - Kood 77mm ring - Cokin slim holder - Hitech ND Grad 9

Shot fridge door (dirty I'm afraid) with no filter at 10mm

Horrible yellowy light in kitchen so 'custom set' white balance then shot fridge door again with magnet to focus on.

No filter @Sigma 10mm (f11 - 4 sec)

Then added the Hitech ND Grad 9 @Sigma 10mm (f11 - 6 sec)

You certainly can't see the holder itself which some people say they can at 10mm but you do get vignetting. That said I found it far more noticable in this example against the fridge than I ever have outdoors.

Anyway - hope that helps.

1 = No filter - Sigma @ 10mm (f11 - 4 sec no flash)

2 - Then added the Hitech ND Grad 9 - Sigma @ 10mm (f11 - 6 sec - no flash)

You certainly can't see the holder itself which some people say they can at 10mm but you do get vignetting at the darker top half. That said I found it far more noticable in this example against the fridge than I ever have outdoors.

Anyway - hope that helps.

Oops - seem to have posted twice (can mods delete one) - I was having probs with the site earlier.

Phil, Many Thanks for this. Much appreciated.

Hmmmm do I go with 85mm or go for the 100mm. Cost versus performance

I did it on a budget so - just went with 85mm Hitech ND soft grad set as 77mm is my widest thread and even on the Sigma 10-20 it's fine once you get past 11mm or 12mm.
