90mm Tamron Macro Lens??

Hello,
So I have recently purchased a Canon 10D. I am very new to the photography world, and my main interests are sports photography, portraits and close-ups. I have been offered a 90mm Tamron 2.8 dedicated Macro Lens for £230- as new. I would just like some advice on this lens, if it's a good choice for portraits and close-ups, and also if it's a good price.
Like I said, I am very new to this, so I apologise for pure lack of knowledge hahaa.

Portraits - yes, if you've got the space.
Close ups - yeas, that's *** it's designed for.
Good price - Mifsuds are asking £279 for one in Canon fit, presumably with their usual 3 month warranty.

i recieved mine yesterday, got it for £240 from one stop digital, very good lens, i got some good close ups, and some good portraits when messing about with it yesterday
