Hi im James and i am intrested in Portrait Work where should i begin with equipment???
I have a Canon Eos 450D with a Standard 18-55mm Lence, and my budget is very flexible. :)

Best place is to start with someone sitting next to a large window to let all the cloudy daylight through. Could then add a reflector on the other side to boost the brightness a bit.

After that you really need to start thinking about off camera lighting, so you need either a set of lights or a flashgun and some triggers.
Best place to chat about lighting is on the lighting section on this forum.
Oh and head over to www.strobist.com which is a great blog all about off camera lighting.

Hi james .

What kind of portarit work are you interested in.

Studio work. outdoor. wedding. street. models. kids.

Who's style of portrait do you like and what would you like to get from it.

Just a few points to think about before you think of getting any more kit.

No point buying some studio lights if you like doing low light outdoor stuff.;)

oh and welcome

Have a look through the people and portrait section . You will see people that are trying for the studio style of portraits and people who are doing street photography

look at lukewoodford's work and diddydave for examples

Models - your subjects - people you are photographing.

STreet work - taking pictures of people in the street, almost unawares, nervy, but fun.

He has really inspired me to do Model Photography :) so any tips on equipment to start for a beginner with a Canon eos 450d :)

Maybe you should consider getting a Nifty Fifty (f/1.8 - £70 new or preferably f/1.4 - £220 new) - it's more of a portrait lens than the 18-55mm.

The f/1.4 one is better for working where there is not much outside-camera light. Although the f/1.8 is still pretty good and probably better quality than the 18-55mm you've got.

Good luck finding what you need!
